"My mom, Louise Kime, has just been diagnosed with breast cancer. She is scheduled for a lumpectomy this Thursday at St. Luke's. Please keep our family, Paul & I, Sarah & Joe McMillen, and especially my mom, in your prayers."

Givens Condo in North Carolina Destroyed By Fire
Soprano Kathy Given's husband Dave has been working in North Carolina for the past several months. On Saturday his condo on McFadyen lake near Fayetteville, N.C. was destroyed by fire. Both Kathy and Dave were in the condo when the fire broke out about 5 p.m. They escaped uninjured, but lost all of their belongings.

The Givenses told their story to the Fayetteville Observer:
___________
Condo resident Kathy Givens first noticed the fire when burning embers from the unit upstairs started falling onto her second-floor sun deck. She quickly summoned her husband, Dave, who was about to take a shower after competing in a table-tennis competition.

"The first thing I wanted to do was try to douse our deck, because I didn't know how involved it was," Dave Givens said.

But then the black smoke started pouring in.

The couple gathered a few things such as cellphones and fled. Kathy Givens said she was so panicked that she called a department store by mistake when she was trying to dial 911.

Dave Givens pounded on his neighbors' doors to alert them of the fire.
Then, as the smoke detectors chirped, the Givenses and other residents watched as the fire spread through the building despite its sprinklers and firewalls. One woman sat in a car with tears in her eyes.

Firefighters from Fort Bragg and Cumberland County volunteer departments helped city firefighters put out the fire. They used ladder trucks to spray the burning building from above.

Last Call for Thursday Dinner at GC Food & Brewery
The manager and chef at our next stop are excited to have us eat there on Thursday. Join us for dinner at GC Food and Beverage, 11411 Olive Blvd. This is a pleasant restaurant with an interesting menu located on the north side of Olive just east of Craig Road. I sampled several items Sunday evening and can't wait to try some others. We'll gather there at 6:30 p.m.next Thursday, June 21. If you'd like to join us, reply to this email on or before noon tomorrow, Wednesday, June 20.

Cares and Concerns
Tenor Walt Huse has been hospitalized. He is at St. Luke's Hospital in Chesterfield in room 7717. No additional information is available.

This condo was a second home for the couple; they primarily live in St. Louis, Mo., but rent the condo because Dave Givens works at Fort Bragg. They didn't lose much that mattered to them, they said.

But there was one thing.

"I left my wedding ring in there," Kathy Givens said, standing outside next to her husband. "Guess I'll have to have a new one. Will you marry me again?"
"Sure I will," he said, with no hesitation.
____________
Firemen found Kathy's wedding ring later that evening. The Red Cross has put them up in a hot and provided money for clothes. Kathy says they really appreciate it since they have no clothes to wear.

Jim Starbuck Announces His Engagement
Bass Jim Starbuck became engaged to Suzanne Hopkins while on a recent cruise to Alaska. He presented her a ring at a formal dinner on June 4 on board the Holland America cruise ship. Jim says they met with senior paster Greg Weeks the week before they left for his blessing.

Chancel Choir Update 5/11 (p.m.): More Important News
Missing Music Is Due Now
The librarians called me today. I was shaking until I learned I wasn't in trouble, but many of you are. Rose Carlisle reports many "she said mannnny" singers have not turned music yet. She's worried you'll disappear for the summer and take your music with you. That's bad because they can't put it away until they have all of the copies. She says it's hard to walk around the music library now with all the music laying there waiting for you to turn yours in. So, please remember to bring you're music with you on Sunday or to one of our next rehearsals. You don't want them after you . . .

John Cargile Sends Us This Message

Dear Chancel Choir members,
THANK YOU so much for coming in to hear me at the cathedral this past Thursday. There was a great "showing" of both Manchester peeps and Gateway Men's Chorus peeps. Canon Precentor Pat Partridge (the cathedral Director of Music) was MOST pleased. I don't think I embarrassed us too much...I've been asked to return to play in the fall. Thanks again for your support and encouragement. It was great to see familiar, friendly faces when I finally did look out! (Still suffering from bathophobia!)

Vacation Bible School Dinner Help Needed
This note from Diane Lawrence:
As many of you know the Chancel Choir has once again committed to helping with Vacation Bible School this summer. We will help with dinners on Monday, July 16 and Tuesday, July 17, from 4:30 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. If you are unable to arrive at 4:30 or stay until 7:00 do not let that stop you. The chores are more social than cooking -- setting the tables, preparation of sides, setting up serving line, serving, bussing tables, helping people wherever necessary and cleaning up. Everything is pretty much just like at home except you get to do it with your choir friends. Since there is so few choir rehearsals left, please email me which night you would like to help. That way I have your email for a reminder as we get closer to VBS. I will also put a sheet in the Music Room. Thanks for your commitment. These dinners are part of what makes VBS work; many would not be able to attend if they had to make dinner before coming. Send your reply to Diane at: dslmath@aol.com or call: 636-391-6435

After graduating from Parkway South this spring, she will attend Truman State University next year and major in education. The Chancel Choir scholarship is presented each spring following a selection process that begins in February. Letters are sent to youth eligible for the scholarship inviting them to apply. A selection committee, headed each year by the choir's presented elect, interviews applicants and makes the final selection. Beginning next year, Alto Lois Hendrickson will serve as the choir's scholarship coordinator tracking the renewals each year. Recipients are allowed to renew their annual $1000 scholarship for up to three years as long as they remain registered as a full-time student.

Join the MUMC youth as they host “Night at the Bistro!” a Night on the Town for the adults of MUMC and all their friends. This year there will be two nights of dinner and fellowship: May 4 and May 5 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. There will be delicious food for the first half, and we’d love it if you stick around for entertainment by the youth for the second half. We are also offering free childcare with dinner included for those who need it. The cost is $25 per person and $160 for a table. This year, the proceeds will benefit the youth group for their trips and other needs. Contact the church office for tickets.

Chancel Choir Officers Meeting
Choir officers met last night. Here's a summary of their business.
-- Treasurer's report -- Fundraising (concert) account -- $9000 (concert expense and tithe have not yet been paid); Activity Fund -- $12,333.93
-- The choir will serve two dinners this summer for vacation bible school.
-- Deadline for scholarship applications is 4/15. Five students were eligible this year. Two have submitted applications, one intends to apply, and no response was received from the other two.
-- Officers were asked to indicate if they would like to remain in their jobs for next year.
-- The Bridge needs cups. Officers agreed to purchase two cases of foam cups and donate them to the Bridge. Joan Lemen, choir outreach coordinator, said interest in volunteering at the Bridge has declined. No one helped serve lunch on the choir's designated day in March. Volunteers are needed next Wednesday, April 18. Officers discussed the choir's future commitment to the Bridge. They agreed to see if there was other ways to help there or we could find another outreach project.
-- Seven people backed out of the Memphis trip after agreeing to pay resulting in a $500 shortage in money collected for the bus. Individual costs for the bus were determined after people signed up for the tour. Kevin said in the future a non-refundable deposit would need to be collected at the time people sign up to go on a tour.
-- Chancel Choir summer party will be June 1 at the home of Jo Ann Jones.
