Centenary
Work Day This Saturday; More Volunteers Needed
The work day at Centenary UMC will be this Saturday. This ia work event
to rearrange furniture and organize the canned/dry goods in the pantry
and rearrange furniture for the Bridge homeless food program. According
to Chancel Choir outreach director Joan Lemen, “We still need at
least 10 volunteers. The plan is to carpool from church at 9 a.m. and
hope to return no later than 4 p.m. I will organize a picnic lunch.”

More Help Needed For VBS Meal Service
More help is needed to serve meals for Vacation Bible School. The choir
has been asked to serve meals on Tuesday, July 19 and Wednesday, July
20. We have only 27 people who volunteered to help with meals. Last year
we had 60. Organizer Diane Lawrence says: “I think we can do the
job, but a few more helpers wouldn't hurt. We really don't have any cooking
-- just setting up, serving and cleaning up. Shifts are 1 1/2 hours, between
3:30 and 7 p.m. and the attire is blue Faith in Action shirts.”
If you’d like to help and haven’t signed up yet, call or email
Diane at 636-391-6435 or dslmath@aol.com.

Choir Update 6/13: Important News
Summer Dinner This Week Moved to Bandanna's
Restrictive
group policies at Pasta House in Manchester has resulted in a change of
location for this Thursday's summer dinner. We will eat at Bandanna's
in Manchester, just east of Highway 141 on Manchester Road. After assurances
that our group would be accommodated at the new Pasta House in Manchester,
the social director met with the restaurant's manager last night to learn
the following: a deposit would be required to use the private room; we
could not be seated in the main dining room; no ordering off the menu,
only a preset buffet would be served; the cost per person for the meal,
beverage, tip and tax would be well over $20, too much for the pasta meal.
There was no room for negotiation, so we said no. To keep our summer dinners
simple and affordable, we never pay a deposit and prefer to order from
the menu. Although there are some places that won't deal with a group
of 40 at dinner, most restaurants are happy to have the business. We have
taken our group to the Pasta House in Ellisville a few times over the
years and never had a problem. So, the manager at Bandanna's is thrilled
that we will dine there this week. We've always had a good experience
at Bandanna's -- excellent food and service. We'll be at tables in the
dinning room and order off the menu, no problem. If you've already signed
up this week, we'll see you at 6:30 at Bandanna's. If not, we need to
know you are joining us. Reply to this email or call 636-227-5749 by noon
on Wednesday, June 15.
Robes Will
Be Cleaned and Repaired This Summer
If you've noticed a little nagging problem with your robe, now is the
time to let our Melissa Larsen, our wardrobe director, know. Usual problem
areas are the Velcro on sleeves, the neck hook, and the zipper. If any
of these areas need repair, let Melissa know. She will make repairs this
summer. Send her a note at malarsen17@aol.com
Help Needed
For Fran and Mac McMillian
The Faith In Action team planning the project to paint a large fence for
Fran and Mac McMillian had several volunteers after the last email update,
but still could use a couple more. The fence will be painted this Saturday,
June 18. If you would like to help with the project for a member of our
choir, please respond to Susan Hora at: cusaglass@hotmail.com
What A Party
-- What A Party
The Chancel Choir's annual spring party Saturday was a pleasant evening
for those attending. Besides outstanding food this year and great conversation,
the weather was perfect. Kevin gave his annual state of the choir speech
and reviewed plans and changes for next year. Among the news was the announcement
that rehearsals will start a week earlier than previously planned on Thursday,
Aug. 25, to prepare for the Sept. 11 Tenth Anniversary concert. Kevin
also reported that proceeds from our concert last week will total about
$7,000. Choir policy calls for 10 percent of the net profit from our fund
raising efforts to be donated to the church leaving more than $6,000 from
the concert for our scholarships and community outreach. Attendance at
this year's spring party was notably below average. If you weren't there,
we missed you and hope attendance will be better for the fall kickoff
party. A few photos of the event appear below and a complete set is posted
on the MUMC Chancel Choir Facebook page.

Help Needed
For Fran and Mac McMillian
One of the Neighbor in Need projects for Faith In Action day on May 1
was painting a large fence for Fran and Mac McMillian. The group had it
all planned, but because of the wet weather, the project was canceled.
Susan Hora, the project coordinator, is asking if there are members in
the Chancel Choir who would be willing to provide the labor. “I
have established two possible dates with Mac -- either June 18 or June
25, both Saturdays. I can get two people, but another eight would be great
so that we can get the job done in a morning,” Susan says. If you
would like to help with the project for a member of our choir, please
respond to Susan Hora at: cusaglass@hotmail.com

Help Need

The chancel choir has volunteered to help with the dinners for Vacation
Bible School on Tuesday, July 19, and Wednesday, July 20. The work mainly

will be minimal this year. Dinner is from 5 until 6 p.m. Last year we
had overlapping shifts beginning an hour before and ending an hour later
for clean up. There is a sign up list on the counter in the Music Room.
We need your help and this is a great way to serve the congregation and
have fun visiting with choir friends at the same time.
New York Trip

The next $300 payment for the New York trip this fall is due on May 29.
Please bring your payment to Thursday rehearsals on either May 26 or June

familiar because she was a member of the youth choir for six years before
graduating from Marquette High School in 2003.

2011 Chancel Choir Scholarship to Cameron Kennedy
Cameron Kennedy,
son of Debbie and Chris Kennedy, was presented the 16th annual Chancel
Choir scholarship during Youth Sunday worships services this morning,
Sunday, May 15. Chancel Choir Vice President and Scholarship Chair Joe
McMillen made the presentation. The scholarship, totaling $4,000, will
be paid out $1000 per year as long as Cameron remains in college. He will
graduate from Lafayette High School. The scholarship is presented to a
graduating senior each spring. The selection process begins in March with
applications and ends with extensive interviews in April. The selection
committee is chaired each year by the choir’s vice president/president-elect.
Two years ago the Chancel Choir approved doubling the amount of the scholarship
to $4000 and spreading the payment over the four years the student is
in school. There were four applicants for the scholarship this year.

Rehearsal and recording session this Thursday night at 7:30 p.m.
Start in the Music Room.

A Word About
The Recording Session
The recording Thursday night will become part of a new Holiday Brass CD
to be available prior to this year's Christmas season. The recording will
feature some of the best music performed at the Cathedral and included
on the Holiday Brass's first CD and selections we will record Thursday
that were performed in December in our Sanctuary. Several groups will
be recorded Thursday night during the three-hour session. Each group is
scheduled for a specific time to occupy the Sanctuary for its selections.
The schedule is tight, so we'll need to move in and out quickly. Pete
Derenski, the recording engineer for the first Holiday Brass CD, and I
will be working together to record the choir. There will be much equipment
set up and we'll need your help to make this go smoothly. Pretend you
are in a recording studio while in the Chancel Thursday night. The equipment
is very sensitive. Page turns, crackling candy wrappers, whispering, coughing
-- literally anything -- will be picked up. (You'd be surprised the things
I hear during our regular concerts.) Be patient, there may be several
takes to get it right. Also, please take pride in the ensemble and not
in your own voice. Occasionally some of our singers fail to blend with
their sections. They are easily heard in the pews and on concert recordings.
We need to make sure that doesn't happen during this recording.
Fundraising
Concert Tickets
If you haven't picked up your tickets for the June 5 concert, please see

Time To Sell
Tickets For Choir Fund Raising Concert
It is time to start thinking about ticket sales for our upcoming fund
raising concert on June 5. Chancel Choir officers are requiring every
choir member to sell two tickets. Ticket prices are $15 for regular seating
and $25 for preferred seating. Each choir member will receive tickets
after rehearsal on May 5. Tables will be set up by section so you may
pick up tickets. Money is not due that night. Kristie Whitney is in charge
of ticket sales and will be available at future rehearsals and on Sundays
to collect money and get more tickets if needed. Tickets will also be
sold in the Narthex Sunday mornings from May 8 through June 5. If you
or your spouse are willing to help sell tickets on Sunday mornings, please
contact Kristie at Kristie.whitney@manchesterumc.org or call 636-394-7506

Missing Food
We've been told that a large amount of food and supplies collected for
health kits for Japan earthquake victims disappeared from collection barrels
at the church sometime overnight last Wednesday. Health Kits were going
to be packed during Faith in Action Sunday this week and the food was
headed for the Meal a Month program at Circle of Concern. Merry Gnaegy

Mission Auction
Results
Chancel Choir president Diane Lawrence presented at $1000 donation Saturday
night to the Mission Auction on behalf of the Chancel Choir. In the past,
the choir has bought contents and prepared baskets for the silent auction.
Often the baskets sold for far less than the cost of the contents. So,
this year, we just collected money and gave the auction more than the
baskets earned in past years.

News From
Choir Officers
The Chancel Choir officer met prior to rehearsal last night. Here's a
summer of what they did:
-- Alto Fran McMillian met with officers to discuss the birthday and anniversary
cards distributed each month. Fran has produced the hand made cards for
the past 17 years as a contribution to the choir. She reports that because
of her failing vision, she can no longer do this. Going forward cost of
materials to produce each card was estimated to be about $2.00 each or
about $300 per year for the choir. Following a discussion of several options,
it was decided to stop distributing birthday and anniversary cards to
members each month. Names of birthdays and anniversaries will continue
to be read as before and cards will be sent on behalf of the choir to
express sympathy. Officers thanked Fran for her contribution to the choir.
-- The treasurer reported the choir's activity fund balance was $10,876.
-- President Diane Lawrence reported collection of funds for the Mission
Auction went well. She will announce the amount of the contribution at
the auction on Saturday.
-- Charlotte Moser, choir outreach director, reported that the collection
of food for Centenary has gone well. She also reported a need for three
people to help serve lunch this Wednesday.
-- Soprano Rene Feldkamp will be available prior to Thursday rehearsals
to sell grocery gift cards to anyone who wishes to purchase one. The card
program is a fund raising program for the church. A portion of the cost
of each card is donated to the church by the grocery stores.
-- Vice president Joe McMillen reported the deadline for applications
for this year's choir youth scholarship is Friday (4/15). So far no applications
have been received. Six students were identified as potential applicants
and were sent letters about the scholarship. The Chancel Choir scholarship
will be presented during worship on May 15. Since it is Youth Sunday,
the Chancel Choir won't be in the loft that day. It was agreed that choir
members should plan on attending that day and sit together.
-- Tenor Tim Zink is ready to host the June 11 spring choir potluck. A
time for the event is yet to be determined.
-- The choir's fund raising concert on June 5 was discussed. Past strategies
for involving the choir members in selling tickets were reviewed. It was
decided that all choir members will be required to sell a minimum of two
tickets this year. Additional tickets will be available if members wish
to sell more. As an added incentive, the choir member who sells the most
tickets this year will win lunch with Kevin. Tickets will not be returnable
this year. The $15 tickets will go on sale May 8 and will be available
for five Sundays in the Narthex and on Wednesday nights during the Meals
& Ministries program. Kristie Whitney will be in charge of ticket
sales this year. Kevin reported that three former scholarship recipients
will perform at the concert: Chessie Lynn, Dillion Briggs and Keith Maestas.
Cost of the full orchestra for the concert is being donated by Bass Jim
Starbuck so virtually all of the money from ticket sales will go to the
choir's activities and scholarships.
-- Kevin reported that June 2 will be the last regular rehearsal this
spring. Rehearsals will start again on Sept. 8.
Cares and
Concerns
Gail Mars, mother of Soprano Sue Woolweaver, will undergo open heart surgery
to replace her aortic valve next Thursday at St. Luke's Hospital.
It is with sadness
we report the death Monday (4/11) of Shirley Carr, sister of Bess Ed Brueggeman.

short on attendance this year. Judi Shephard says: “We really are
down on attendance and could use a few more choir members (even if they
just come and eat and dance.) We do still have vacation condos, tickets
to games, etc. and Pastor Greg’s Burgers Dinner for six plus other
“oral” items that are fun.” Contact Judi at 636-458-0087
if you'd like to attend. Cost is $35 per person. The auction is Saturday
evening, April 16.
