Where Does
The Music Go?
So, the singing is done and the librarians put out the word to turn in
the music. Then what? Well all 160 copies of each piece need to be rounded
up, put in numeric order, filed in its own pouch and placed in its proper
place in the Music Library files. If we had 25 pieces of music times 160
copies, well that's a lot. You get the idea. No wonder they get cranky.
That's why they wanted the music in alpha order to save a few steps. (Only
10 choir members helped them by doing that.) Librarians worked several
days this week putting all the music away and getting out the stuff for
spring. The photo below was taken Thursday in the Music Library. Shown
from left: Harriett Kettenhofen, Rose Carlisle, Dean Wilson and Janie
Walker. Other librarians, not shown: Carolyn Andrews, Joan Beach, Pat
Jennings, and Carleen Anderson.
Chancel Choir
Update 12/28: News
There is no Chancel Choir rehearsal this week. The choir does
not sing on Sunday, Jan. 2. The next rehearsal is on Jan. 6.
Kevin Named
Director of St. Louis Symphony IN UNISON Chorus
Kevin announced on Christmas Eve that he had accepted the position of
director of the St. Louis Symphony IN UNISON chorus, succeeding Robert
Ray. This new job will in no way affect his work at the church or with
Chancel Choir. Kevin said he had been working on obtaining the job since
summer and had interviewed with several symphony officials. The process
culminated in an interview with St. Louis Symphony conductor David Robertson
in New York during a quick trip a week ago Sunday. Kevin's first rehearsal
with the chorus is Monday evening, Jan. 3 with his first concert with
the symphony just seven weeks later. Kevin has resigned his position as
adjunct professor of choral music at Webster University in order to make
time for the IN UNISON job. "It was a hard decision to leave Webster,
but the Webster folks knew I was interviewing for this job and were very
supportive," he said. Kevin will meet with his Webster students for
a farewell on Jan. 10. If you're curious about the IN UNISON program and
chorus, here is a link: http://www.stlsymphony.org/cp/iuprogram.htm

Concert Recordings
Work is underway to master the recording of our Christmas concert. It
is an excellent record. If you did not sign up in the Music Room and want
a CD, please respond to this email. Cost is $10. The CDs should be available
at our first rehearsal of the new year on Jan. 6.
Christmas
Eve
Thanks to Chancel Choir members who participated in Christmas Eve services
this year. About 60 singers were present for both the 7 and 9 p.m. services.
Attendance was very good. The 7 p.m. service was only a few seats short
of full.
Kevin Sings
at Christmas Cabaret
Kevin sang jazz, show tunes and Christmas carols during a performance
of Christmas Cabaret at Jazz at the Bistro in mid-town last Wednesday
evening. About 20 Chancel Choir members were in the audience. He was joined
by three other professional musicians, Jeremy Whaley, Brandon Williams
and Andy Waggoner, for the Christmas Cabaret performance.
Librarians
On Duty
The call has gone out for the return of all fall and Christmas music.
If you weren't present on Christmas eve or didn't get the message after
our Christmas concert, all of your music needs to be returned immediately.
Librarians ask that it be placed in the plastic pouch in alphabetical
order and placed in the return bin in the Music Room. It really doesn't
take very long to alpha order the music and it saves them some time.

Fall Concert
Success
Now that all of the music's done, solos sung, cookies crumbled, we should
be very proud of our performances this fall. Attendance at the holiday
concerts was 615 on Saturday and 916 on Sunday (not counting performers).
If you count the Festival at the Convention Center, the Holiday Brass
and our Christmas Concerts, more than 5,000 people have heard our music
this fall. Below are some pictures from this weekend.
Centenary
Kitchen Needs Meat
If you are still in a giving mood, “The Bridge” (the homeless
food program at Centenary UMC) is in desperate need of meat to continue
feeding the homeless. Meat is purchased by the case. It takes 3½
cases per meal, but the freezers are nearly empty. Chicken or pork is
$25 to $30 a case, ground beef is $45 to $50. Make donations through our
church (make checks to “MUMC” with “The Bridge / Centenary”
in the memo line).
Cares and
Concerns
Bass Bill Lange is in rehab at Surrey Place, 14701 Olive Blvd., room C-27,
recovering from recent back surgery.
Alto Mary Merkle asks
for prayers for her mother-in-law. “My husband John and I were on
our way to the concert Saturday night, and picked her up at home to go
with us. She was weak on her left side and her speech was slurred. We
took her right to St. John's ER and they admitted her to ICU where she
is now. The doctor confirmed a stroke affecting her left side. She is
sharp as a tack, but has residual weakness, and slurring of speech. She
is 89 and in very good health, other than that.”

Centenary
On Wednesday
Thanks to Merry Gnaegy, Joan Beach, Harriet Kettenhofen, Joan Lemen, John
Lemen and Brian Klopfenstein for stepping up at the last minute to help
prepare and serve food at Centenary on Wednesday. Remember, the choir
is committed to helping there on the third Wednesday of the month. Some

Cares and
Concerns
-- Dean Carlisle, husband of Soprano Rose Carlisle, is recuperating at
home follow hospitalization for pneumonia.
-- Bass Bill Lange will be moved to a rehab facility today following successful
back surgery on Tuesday.
-- Bass Gary Moser underwent surgery Wednesday at Barnes Hospital to repair
a torn retina in one eye and impending tear in the other. He began having
trouble seeing while on a trip last week. He is recuperating at home.
This from Jean Lange:
"We are most grateful to all choir members for the uplifting prayers
surrounding Bill's surgery. His surgeon reported that all went quite well.
Our choir family is most important to us and we ask for your continued
thoughts and prayers as Bill recovers during the next few months."

Steak 'n Shake
Makes Good On Poor Service
The traditional Thanksgiving celebration at Steak 'n Shake last month
went array this year with poor service and a two hour plus wait for food.
The restaurant chain's district manager has provided coupons for a free
meal to everyone who participated that night and sent a letter of apology.
He told our social director Sandy Ford that the issues in the Manchester
and Ballwin restaurants have been corrected.
Officer Meeting
Business
Choir officers met last night before choir. Here is the scoop:
-- There currently is $13,322.80 in the choir's activity fund (that's
money raised by choir members and not a part of the church music budget).
The choir will be paid $2,000 for participation in the Holiday Brass concerts.
-- The distribution of $1,000 for a scholarship for Mozambique student
Stella Machel was approved. The scholarship was approved by the choir
almost two years ago, but the money was never paid out. Dick Vreeland
explained that the student could not attend graduate school in South Africa
as originally intended and is now in grad school at the University of
London. Money from several church groups and our conference has been used
to pay the $4650 for her first year tuition and the choir was asked to
pay the originally approved amount for her second year.
-- A total of 85 gift cards were given by choir members to Circle of Concern
this year totaling $1,275.
-- Payment for purchase of commercial dishes for Centenary's homeless
food program was approved. The choir had approved the purchase in September.
Cost was $667.
-- The holiday party was discussed. Kevin reported that the $30 ticket
price will include a buffet dinner and the costs associated with an appearance
of Two Time True, Carolbeth True's ensemble. The group is appearing for
a discounted cost of $500.
-- The Holiday Brass concerts were discussed and all agreed it was a major
coup to have the program in our building.

Cares and
Concerns
Last night we said goodbye to Soprano Kate Eastwood. Here's a note from
her:
"And, about 9 days ago, I received a job offer from The Schubert
Club in St. Paul, Minn., which is home to me. The timing is fabulous,
and has had God's hand in it, I'm sure. With my sister's health concerns,
and now my mom, I will be pulling away from my place here in St. Louis
on either Friday or Saturday of Turkey weekend, depending on when the
movers can get me packed. Hard to do, but all is well, I'm sure of it.
"Choir has really been my family over the last 5 years or so, a gift
I have been blessed with. You all have put up with my crazy antics, and
allowed me to sing gloriously to God, and I enjoy the friendships i have
formed. You've held me up when the going got tough, and laughed AT me
when it was necessary!
"I have told folks that I don't want to the hear the g-word (goodbye).
I'm getting too dang old for that! So, I will say, and accept, 'I'll be
in touch.' Too many friends to simply leave. You'll likely see me at concerts
and such, when I can get away for a long drive."
Chancel Choir

A Note About
Sunday Worship Decorum
A couple of things come to mind after Sunday's worship service:
Cell Phones -- Immediately after Greg's sermon in the
quite pause following the final sentence, a cell phone sounded from the
choir loft. We often complain about "those rude people in the pews"
but what about us? Be sure to turn your cell phone off or at least put
it on vibrate during the worship service on Sunday.
You're On Camera -- Each worship service is video recorded
and available on the church's website for all the world to see. That means
if you sit in the first two rows, especially right behind the pastor,
you're on TV for long period of time. Everything you do and every move
you make is seen as the sermon's backdrop. Below, I've provided two links
to two sermons from last month. You'll see choir members shuffling, reading
their music, visiting, and generally disengaged from the service. We're
on stage in front of as many as 1000 people and on TV, just as if we were
performing in a theater or TV studio. We really need to remember. Fidgeting
like children isn't very impressive for the largest Methodist choir in
the state.

Cares and
Concerns
We received this note from Alto Mary Lou Adams:
“My dear choir friends and buddies,
I must try the impossible task of thanking you for your love and prayers
that surrounded me and Jack since we have been hit with bad health. We'll
never forget all the smiles and joy that your cards have brought us. God
bless you all.”
Mary remains at Town & Country Health Care, 13995 Clayton Road, Town
& Country, MO 63017. Cards from choir members would be appreciated.
It is with sadness that we report the death of Bass Joe McMillian’s
grandmother, Helen Gray. She died Friday in Indiana after a long illness.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Morgan & Nay Funeral
Centre in Madison, Ind. A family visitation will be from 5 until 8 p.m.

Email Reception
>From time to time people ask why they no longer get our email updates
and if I have deleted them from the list. Of course, the answer is no.
I never delete anyone from the list unless they leave choir. Often the
problem is caused by the recipient's email Spam filter. If you suddenly
stop hearing from us, check your Spam filter to see if it has blocked
our updates. If so, set it to "white list" or "accept"
mail from us. We can be blocked by your filter without your knowing about
it.
Chancel Choir
Officers
The choir officers met last night. Below is a summary of discussion and
action from the meeting.
-- Current treasurer's balance is $12,448. Discrepancies in the balance
discussed last month have been located and corrected. All but one of the
checks to pay for the Chicago trip brunch have been rewritten after they
were discovered in a storage box several months after they were written.
Everyone who attended last week's retreat has paid.
-- The Music Ministry Endowment Fund established a few years ago now totals
$13,000. Of that amount, $3,000 is available for use. There is a total
of $6,000 in memorials and gifts designated for use by the Music Ministry
and Chancel Choir. Some of the memorial funds have been earmarked for
specific projects in memory of individuals.
-- Discussed the new plan for sections to bring treats for "party
night" the first rehearsal of each month. Kevin has distributed a
schedule.
-- Discussed the recent Retreat. Kevin asked for comments officers had
heard from choir members about the retreat. Comments included several
complaints that the Friday snacks were not substantial enough for dinner.
Many people came directly from work expecting heavier snacks as in the
past. Some people liked having it at church so there was no travel need.
Others felt it was not a "retreat" if we just have another rehearsal
at the church. One person complained that there wasn't enough singing
and too much play. Others complained that there was not enough time to
socialize this year. There were many positive comments about the guest
conductors. People seemed to like the worship service. Kevin said he may
have another longer rehearsal in the spring, perhaps at another location
or at another church. He said he felt the retreat was as much about socializing
and getting to know new members as it was about rehearsal. We will make
a point of having heavier food on Friday night or perhaps a potluck.
-- Charlotte Moser, the choir's community outreach director, reported
on recent activities. Another group in the church has bought the dishes
requested by Centenary for its homeless food service program. During the
month of September, Centenary served 13,000 meals. We have had a good
number of volunteers to help at Centenary. Officers agreed that $15 gift
cards from local grocery stores for use by Circle of Concern families
would be offered to the choir for purchase for Christmas. Collection of
the cards will run from Nov. 4 through Nov. 21. It was reported that Circle
of Concern's food pantry is often low on food and they are having a problem
getting donation. In light of the church's big drive to provide food to
Operation Food Search, officers wondered why we have continued to help
Circle of Concern which nearby and has a long standing relationship with
the church's outreach.
-- The choir's holiday party will be on Sunday, Jan. 16, at Jazz at the
Bistro just off Grand Avenue near the Fox Theater. Kevin will meet with
section managers and elected representatives right after rehearsal to
discuss plans for the party.
-- Officers discussed a request from Stella Machel, a student from Mozambique
who is asking for another $1,000 grant to continue her graduate study.
The choir gave her $1,000 two years ago. Stella was unable to enter graduate
school until now and is currently using money provided by the choir and
other groups two years ago. Officers expressed surprise that she had not
reported to us that our gift had not been used. Officers suggested that
in the future receipts and confirmation of use of the gift would be required.
The current request was tabled until next month when Dick Vreeland is
asked to attend the meeting to discuss the situation with the student.
-- Officers discussed our fund raising concert this year. The concert
has been scheduled for June 5 and concern was raised about our ability
to raise money that late in the choir season. Kevin said conflicts in
the church's event schedule along with other choir concerts had delayed
the concert until June this year. The choir is now committed to as much
as $4,000 a year for continuing scholarships as well as community outreach
needs. In recent years commitment and participation by the choir to fund
raising concerts and talent shows has been lessening. Effort to make this
concert a bigger event will be made this year.

Retreat Retreat
Retreat
Well, if you missed the annual Chancel Choir retreat last weekend you
really did miss a good time. About 100 choir members participated in the
weekend activities including snacks, rehearsal, games, snacks, a worship
service in the old chapel, snacks, rehearsal, a fantastic catered lunch,
guest conductors, snacks. On Saturday afternoon the choir had sectional
rehearsals with guest conductors. Steve Slusher, tenor for our Seven Last
Words concert, worked with the men and Pam Grooms, choral director from
Lindenwood, worked with the women. Relive some of the memories with the
photos below.

Cares and
Concerns
It's another great-grandchild for Alto Fran McMillian. Finley Douglas
Jones arrive at 3:36 a.m. Thursday weighing in at 8 pounds 14 ounces.
His parents are Molly and Sean Jones, grandparents are Craig and Bobette
Neal, great-grandparents Fran and Mac McMillian. All generations are doing
well.
Sunday is also a milestone
day on the calendar. It's 10/10/10. You may want to keep the blinds closed.
You just never know. Do you remember what you were doing on 9/9/99 or
8/8/88? or even 7/7/77?
Greetings All!
It will be a busy
week for us, and I'm looking forward to it! We're off and running and
your participation in worship has been excellent! I must admit, when I
saw that 31 people had signed out last Sunday, I did worry a bit - but
both, "O Taste and See" and "For the Beauty" were
beautiful!
Tonight - The Symphony
Chorus will be rehearsing in the sanctuary, beginning at 7:00pm. Having
them in our space is important for several reasons:
-Many "city" people don't believe there's life west of I-270,
so we get to show them our home.
-This group has an amazing work ethic!
-You never get to hear what a choir sounds like in the space!
Please feel free to come and go as you need. Sit anywhere in the sanctuary
and enjoy. Remember, the talking section is in the Fireside Room!
Retreat will be outstanding!
As always, I'm eager to get started on Christmas music. There will be
food and fun, and an opportunity for us to grow. Be sure to bring your
registration stuff on Thursday!
See you soon!
