Nursing Home
Outreach Discussed
A program to provide music in local nursing homes was discussed by Chancel
Choir officers at their meeting last night. Choir President Donna Biolchini
told officers the choir should be able to sing at local nursing homes
if it can perform in other cities while on tour. Several approaches to
this outreach project were discussed including a monthly visit to a facility
or possible dividing the choir into four smaller choirs and spending one
Sunday afternoon singing at four facilities. Kevin will look into the
possibilities and create a list of potential locations.

Kari Maestas was sent to her university.

-- The "fellowship friend" program to assign a choir member
to a new member will be revived this year.

be handled this year was considered. It was decided that a box lunch will

Shhhhhh. Don't tell anyone, but Kevin turned 48 years old yesterday. Sure,
I know he doesn't look a day over 30. (Neither do I, people have talked.)
But that's the way life is. So last night we cut some cake and sang Happy
Birthday. It was also the start of his 15th season as our director. We
won't even discuss the implications of that aging process. We had a great
time. If you weren't there, we missed you. Take a look below.

and calls after Connie's death. Connie so loved his years of singing in
Chancel Choir. We suspect he's instigating mischief in some heavenly bass
section, just as he did at MUMC. We greatly appreciate your support and
your thoughtfulness at this time of loss." Merry & Dave Gnaegy
Spread The
Word About Joseph Martin's Visit
With a composer of the stature of Joseph Martin in our chancel Sunday
it would be nice to have a larger crowd than our usual summer attendance.
Since the church has made little mention of Martin's visit, the Chancel
Choir should do its best to talk it up. Martin of course is the composer
of The Awakening and Who Are The Brave, which was performed at the Pentagon
after 9/11. His first solo piano recording, American Tapestry, was nominated
for a Dove Award. This album, along with his other recordings (Songs of
the Journey, Celtic Tapestry, and A Christmas Tapestry) has been enormously
popular in the sacred and secular audiences. He is recognized throughout
the United States for his many choral compositions, both sacred and secular.
Over a thousand of his compositions are currently in print and the list
continues to grow.
Last year, he visited
the Spring Hill United Methodist Church near Tampa, Fla., on the afternoon
of the Super Bowl. Below is a story about his visit that appeared in the
Tampa Tribune the day before the concert. I'm including it here so you
can get an idea of what our worship services will be like on Sunday.

Composer/Pianist
Joseph Martin To Perform And Direct Choir
By MAUREA SLEESMAN, Tampa Tribune
SPRING HILL - For a mega-dose of inspiration - at 3 p.m. tomorrow hours
before the Super Bowl - renowned Christian composer/pianist Joseph M.
Martin will perform and direct the 80-member Chancel Choir at Spring Hill
First United Methodist Church. Adults and older children are invited to
enjoy the inspirational music, humor, uplifting message and commentary
during the concert. The concert will conclude by 4:30 - well in time for
Super Bowl fans.
The concert is free,
although a love offering will be taken.
Jack Evans, church
music director since May 2006, has called upon Martin several times for
church music workshops and choir concerts, including one held at SHUMC
last March. Evans spoke about tomorrow's concert. Here is part of that
interview:
How did you learn
about Joseph Martin's Christian music?
"Along with more
than 1,000 church music directors from America and world wide, I attend
an annual choral music conference held each year in Pennsylvania. Of the
many Christian music composers' new publications presented there, Mr.
Martin's is the best. His music is extremely popular in today's churches."
Please describe his
Christian music.
"Joseph Martin's
music is hard to describe. It is so varied. But he always achieves excitement.
He often builds the music to a point of climax, which he calls "a
resurrection moment," leading to a solemn ending with a spiritual
message. He has great piano accompaniments in his choral anthems and he
also has wonderful harmonization and rhythm changes that make the music
exciting.
"Martin is a
composer of more than 1,000 sacred and secular choral compositions. He
has performed solo piano recitals and has been the featured artist with
symphony orchestras in the United States and Mexico. His piano recording
'American Tapestry' has been nominated for a Dove Award. Martin is a master
at weaving familiar hymn tunes into his piano compositions.
"Some of his
performances on CDs will be available for sale tomorrow. Many people attend
his concerts to hear him play because his musicianship is excellent and
he is a true virtuoso."
Is it all new Christian
music or is some of it familiar to listeners?
"Mr. Martin frequently
builds on familiar and beloved hymns and melodies as Bible based or hymn-tune
based anthems. If you hear, for instance, a composition based on the hymn
'How Great Thou Art,' you will easily recognize it and be impressed by
his interpretation. I know that as choir members become familiar with
the music, many become affected by it and have this music become a permanent
part of their lives."
Do you mean rehearsal?
"Yes. These concert
numbers for tomorrow have been rehearsed many times in months of preparation,
so the music does become familiar to the choir. Of course the choir members
practice on their own at home too, and they tell me how much they enjoy
the music and how it has helped them to grow in music appreciation."
The church pianist,
Ashley Ducale, wants to watch the Super Bowl partly because she relishes
challenges. Asked about music challenges and tomorrow's concert, she said:.
"How beautiful
Joseph Martin's music is. I can't say enough. To see him and to hear him
play the piano and to enjoy his anecdotes about his music is just an amazing
and unforgettable experience. Our hearts will soar as we head for Super
Bowl kickoff. P.S. Being from North Carolina, I say GO GIANTS!"
"Tomorrow will
have different music coupled with more of Martin's personally announced
selections as he plays them on the piano and comments on their content
and his inspirations for the music.
He has an outstanding
ability to verbally communicate and relate to people. His sense of humor
coupled with detailed explanations of what he is trying to achieve in
the music he has written keeps listeners enthralled. Then he goes to the
piano and makes it rock with his playing. "He makes that piano talk!,"
one listener exclaimed recently, who heard him here at last year's concert."

Update 7/19: Interesting News
As many of you know, Chancel Choir Director Kevin McBeth resigned
as director of the St. Louis Metro Singers earlier this summer to pursue
a part-time assignment teaching choral music at Webster University this
fall. As a farewell gift, the Metro Singers commissioned St. Louis sculptor
Don Weigand to make a casting of Kevin's hands as a keepsake. The cast
for a mold of his hands was made Thursday evening at Weigand's Chesterfield
studio. The finished piece will display a full-sized replica of Kevin's
hands holding a baton. A short video of the mold making process has been
posted on YouTube and can be viewed by clicking the link below. You can
also read about the sculptor who has made castings of other famous St.
Louis hands including Ozzie Smith's at the second and third links below.

Dorothea Bante's 90th Birthday Memories and Wishes
Many of you remember Dorothea Bante. Her husband Gus was the
first Chancel Choir director in the 1950s and she was the accompanist.
Through the years, she remained a visible part of the church's music program
and was the accompanist for the Good News Quartet for more than 30 years.
Dorothea is in Osage Beach Health Care Center, in Osage Beach, Mo. recovering
from surgery and broken bones following a fall earlier this summer. Her
90th birthday is this Friday, July 24, and her daughter has called with
a request. She is requesting a sharing of fond memories and birthday wishes
for Dorothea to be emailed to: dorothea@denara.ws (This is an unusual
format for an email address, but it is correct.) Your memories and wishes
will go directly to the daughter’s computer and she will compile
them and give them to Dorothea on her birthday next Friday.
