Chancel Choir Update 6/3: Baba Yetu Sunday Video Clip
Below is a link to a video clip recorded Sunday morning during Baba Yetu so you can see how the dancers looked. Kevin first ran across this song when the Coventry Choir was asked to perform with the touring company for Video Games Live at the Fox Theater in January 2008. The sold out performance featured St. Louis Symphony musicans and Coventry performing music from several video games under the direction of Christopher Tin who composed Baba Yetu for the opening menu in the computer game Civilization IV. The clip below takes you to a video posted on Facebook. Once the video screen appears, click on the big blue arrow in the lower left corner. You don't have to participate in Facebook to see the video. The second link below is to a recording of the actual soundtrack of Baba Yetu as it appears in the Civilization IV opening. Enjoy.

This note was received from John Lemen:
To Chancel Choir:
It is hard to express what it feels like to be on the receiving end of a cascade of cards and notes from the Chancel Choir members. Just about the time you feel down from the prospect of recovery the mail carrier delivers another batch of cards. It is wonderful. Usually you don't get a chance to see what sort of floral gift is delivered on your behalf. Attached is a picture of the plant I received.

This note was received from Margaret Webb:
Dear Chancel Choir Family,
Thank you so very much for the exquisite flowering plant. It kept my days in rehab from being so dismal and it is enhancing my home. I am very grateful for the many cards and calls during this difficult time. I will continue to work on my physical therapy.
Thanks to each of you.
Margaret Webb

Chancel Choir Update 5/18: Community Outreach Gifts Help Others
Kari Maestas Receives $4000 Chancel Choir Scholarship
Kari Maestes, daughter of Barbara and Daniel Maestas, was presented the 14th annual Chancel Choir scholarship during Youth Sunday worships services on Sunday, May 17. Chancel Choir Vice President and Scholarship Chair Donna Biolchini made the presentation. The scholarship, totaling $4000, will be paid out $1000 per year as long as Kari remains in college. Kari graduated from Parkway West High School on Saturday and will attend Murray State University in Murray, Ky., this fall pursing a career in nursing. The scholarship is presented to a graduating senior each spring. The selection process begins in March with applications and ends with extensive interviews in May. The selection committee is chaired each year by the choir’s vice president/president elect. This spring the Chancel Choir approved doubling the amount of the scholarship to $4000 and spreading the payment over the four years the student is in school.

Contribution to BJC Hospice Stepping Stones Camp Brings Tears
The Chancel Choir’s $1000 contribution last week to the BJC Hospice Stepping Stones Bereavement Camp for Children will be used to help local children who have lost a loved on through death. The camp lost most of its equipment and supplies in a flood last fall. The choir's gift will go toward replacing some of that equipment and assisting with the cost of sending children to the camp. Program Director Eileen Spinner was quick to thank the choir in an email to Choir President Ann Garber:

Manchester Chancel Choir:
This just brings tears to my eyes. What a blessing and I can't even begin to tell you how thankful we are for your generosity. When I talked to you Thursday I was so excited to know that the group wanted to support us, but I could have never imagined such a generous donation. Thank you a million times!! I would love to come out and talk to the group. Please let me know some times that you will be meeting so that I can plan accordingly. THANK YOU SO MUCH!
Eileen Spinner, MA, PLPC
BJC Hospice
Volunteer Services Coordinator
Camp/Retreat Coordinator

The Stepping Stones weekend camp is offered annually in August for children 6-12 who have lost a loved one through death. Ideal candidates are still coming to terms with a loss that occurred six or more months ago.

At the camp, children interact with others their age who have had similar experiences. They learn they're not alone and their feelings are normal. Although the experience is not designed to be therapy, Stepping Stones Camp provides an environment in which children learn about grief and can express their feelings. Activities include the creation of memory pieces, games and a memorial service.

Stepping Stones Bereavement Camp for Children is open to any child who has lost a loved one, not only those who were served by BJC Hospice. Stepping Stones is located at Camp Wyman in Eureka, Mo.

Fall Follies Fund Raiser Is Set For November 14
Yes, it’s time for the Chancel Choir Fall Follies Talent Show fundraiser. The 2009 edition of the Follies is set for Saturday, Nov. 14. It’s not too early to be thinking about that big act. You know, the one you wished you’d entered the last time and said wait ’till the next show. That time is here. More details will follow, at least there’s that danger.

$1000 Given to BJC Hospice For Youth Camp Program
Following a recommendation by Chancel Choir officers, the choir membership approved a gift of $1000 to the BJC Hospice for its summer camp program for youth who have suffered the loss of a parent, sibling or friend. The annual camp program suffered a set back last year when all of its equipment and supplies were destroyed in a flood at the camp site in Jefferson County. Choir membership expressed an interest in giving the organization a second $1000 gift. Eilene Spinner, BJC Hospice program director, will make a brief presentation to the choir at an upcoming rehearsal.

$1000 Given To Help Mozambique Student Attend Graduate School
The Chancel Choir approved a gift of $1000 toward the costs of sending Mozambique student Stella Machel to graduate school in South Africa to obtain a master’s degree in international economics. Choir officers had been approached to assist other ministries in the church by giving $1,000 in each of the two years (2009 and 2010) of the graduate school program which will cost a total $6,670 for the student. During discussion before the vote, members expressed concern about committing now to a second gift for 2010. The United Methodist Men and United Methodist Women along with several individuals from the congregation are participating in the project.

Centenary Meal Service Needs Help on Wednesday
We need help with our mission outreach to Centenary United Methodist Church in downtown St. Louis next Wednesday, May 20. Once each month a team of four choir members goes to the church to help prepare and serve lunch to the homeless in the church's food kitchen. You don't need to be a cook, just be willing to help out from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. The group car pools from our church. It is a worthwhile experience and actually fun. Check with Barb Farmer at bfarmmo@gmail.com for details.

Greeters Needed On Last Sunday
Chancel choir provides greeters at the door of the Narthex on fourth Sunday of the month. We'll need greeters for Sunday, May 24, prior to the 10:50 a.m. worship service. If you can help, email Tenor Tim Zink at timnlor@charter.net or call 314-566-6340.

Cares and Concerns
Baritone John Lemen has been cleared by his doctor to drive, not that he wants to. But, that’s a good sign that he’s making a good recovery from multiple broken bones he recently suffered when a bicycle he was riding collided with a car.

Soprano Mary Ann Kinder reports her son was injured yesterday (5/14) when he fell down a flight of stairs while carrying his infant. The child was not hurt, but her son underwent surgery yesterday to repair a broken leg and torn tendon.

Cares and Concerns
Soprano Sue Woolweaver is recovering from outpatient surgery on Thursday (5/7) to repair a torn rotator cuff in her right shoulder. She seriously injured her previously torn shoulder while reaching for a gym bag on Monday. She is recovering at home. Her address is: 443 Charter Way Drive, Grover, MO 63040.

Tenor John Lemen is recovering from multiple broken bones and lacerations suffered when a car sideswiped the bicycle he was riding Sunday on Olive Blvd while changing lanes to make a left turn. He was taken by ambulance to the hospital for examination. He suffered multiple fractures of the pelvis, multiple broken ribs, and a broken clavicle. None required surgery and he will be recuperating at home for six weeks. Here is his description of the incident: "I glanced off the side of the car, bike flew out from under me and gravity introduced me to the road. All at something over 20 miles per hour. Result is a few fractures of the pelvis . . . not separated so just cracked and very painful. I can't walk without assistance so I have a walker now. Also a wheelchair. Some fractured ribs. Don't know how many. Anything over one is too many. Broken clavicle, not just cracked this time but according to Dr. Jones 'several pieces in there'. None of it requires surgery, and any one by itself would not be a disabling injury. Having all of them together and all on the same (left) side will keep me down for maybe six weeks. We'll see how fast the old guy knits back together." Police investigated the accident, but have not determined fault. John's address is: 909 Wynhaven Lane, Ballwin, MO 63011. Both Sue and John were treated by orthopedist Dr. Bruce Jones, husband of Soprano Jo Ann Jones.

Cares and Concerns
This from Baritone Larry Dietzel:
“Dear Choir family: The love, cards, thoughts and prayers that you sent me at the passing of my father were overwhelming. This was my first time losing a parent, and I must say, it isn't easy at any age. I had a kind of beaver cleaver childhood. I am an only child and my mom devoted her life to my dad and me. She mentioned to me recently that when she met my dad, it was love at first sight. She also said that in over 60 years of marriage, she and dad had never spent one day apart. That's hard for many of us to believe in our current society. It will, of course, be an especially difficult adjustment for her not having him there each day. But God has a plan for each of us and with his guidance, your love and support, we will move forward. I am so blessed to have this incredible extended church family. Thank you for being there for us. God Bless, Larry”

Soprano Shannon Meriwether reports that her mother came home from the hospital last Wednesday after almost five weeks. She is doing great although still on oxygen.

Soprano Christina Vogel announced her engagement just after warm up on Sunday morning. We're sure further details will follow.

Chicago Photo Help
The usual trip photographers won't be making the trek to Chicago. I am asking anyone with digital camera to shoot some photos for me. I'm looking for unusual and interesting photos of choir members taken at close range so we can see faces. A group shot in front of Lake Michigan is nice, but we need faces too. If you get some neat shots, please provide the files to me on a CD as soon as you get back. Photos will be considered for the choir wall calendar or website. Thanks.

Kevin Will Direct A University Choir This Fall
Kevin announced at rehearsal last night that beginning in August he will become the director of a college choir. Kevin will be an adjunct professor (part-time) in Webster University’s department of music teaching vocal ensemble singing. His primary assignment will be the director of the Webster University Concert Choir (which rehearses for an hour at noon Monday, Wednesday and Friday). He has resigned as the director of the St. Louis Metro Singers after eight years. Kevin told the choir that this new job will in no way affect his participation or duties with the Chancel Choir or the church’s music program.

Cares and Concerns
This from Tenor Steve Nicholson:

“Pam Nicholson, wife of tenor Steve Nicholson, who has been fighting ovarian cancer for almost three years, has decided to end chemotherapy and enter hospice care. She wishes to thank the Chancel Choir for its continual love, support, prayers and good thoughts during this difficult time. It has also been a time of celebrations as we’ve made new friends and learned what God means by agape love.

“We also have a favor to ask of all of you. As many of you know this has been particular difficult time for our daughter Katie. In the midst of all this, Katie’s 21st birthday is April 25th. For those who are so inclined, could you please send her a birthday card? You are more than welcome to pass this request along to anyone else, who you think would like to participate. Chancel Choir Update 4/14: News
It's a busy week for the Chancel Choir. Rehearsals for our musical will be held at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday (tomorrow), Thursday and Saturday. It's important that you attend as many of these rehearsals as possible. The musical will be presented at 7 p.m. on Sunday evening. (Not 7:30 as incorrectly listed in the Easter Sunday bulletin.) The musical will be fun. Don't stress, just come and have a good time. We'll see you tomorrow night.

Today is the 250th anniversary of George Frideric Handel's death. The guy was a "rock star" of his day -- widely sought after by royalty and the public. His commissions for the king, operas and other works were wildly popular during his life and his legacy had lasting impact on composers who followed. Thousands of churches (including us) sang the Hallelujah chorus on Easter Sunday. We all should strive to be remembered 250 years later. Want to know more, click these links:

Remember, no regular rehearsal tomorrow night. But, we'll work on the music from 8:30 p.m. until 9:30 p.m.

More important dance steps coming at rehearsal this Thursday. We'll see you then.

Your Help Needed For Party Night This Week
Everybody likes to stick around after rehearsal the first Thursday of the month for party night. Soprano Jo Ann Jones reports there is only one person signed up to bring treats this week. Jo Ann says she doesn't have time to bring food this week and hopes there's seven people in the choir (preferably who haven't furnished treats before) who will be willing to help out this week. If you can, send her a note at momjones@gmail.com. Without your help, the pickings will be slim after rehearsal on Thursday.

Cares and Concerns
This from Soprano Shannon Meriwether:
"My mom has been moved to a regular room. Her heart seems alright but she still needs oxygen and they are not yet sure why. She also appears to have sleep apnea. I'd like to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers, and e-mails. She should be going home by the end of the week."
