failure and has been on Peritoneal Dialysis since June while awaiting
a kidney transplant at Barnes Jewish Hospital. Thoughts and prayers for
his continued strength to get through this stage of the new road we have
to travel are appreciated."
Have a safe and happy new year.

Christmas Eve Schedule
We sing for
both the 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. services on Christmas Eve. We hope you can
sing for both. Report to the Music Room at 6:30 p.m. Bring those singing
family members that would like to join us.
Wonderful
Christmas Concert
The final attendance for Sunday's Christmas extravaganza was 1,375. This
was likely the best attended Christmas concert at the church and a great
way to mark the 10th anniversary of the Sanctuary. A digital recording
was made and CDs will be available soon. A signup will be posted at the
first rehearsal of the new year. The 88 nativity sets on display in the
Narthex were a big hit. A special thanks to all who brought cookies for
the reception. Soprano Joanne Jones reports there were more than enough
cookies and the left overs were taken to Centenary Church, the fire station
up the street, and another location identified by the church. The church's
hospitality committee set up and served the reception for us.

"Thank you so much for the cards, phone calls, visits and the beautiful

I've missed all the MUMC traditions of this season and will certainly
miss singing with the choir at the concert and on Christmas Eve. Merry
Christmas to each of you."

Sanctuary
10th Anniversary Memories
Ten years ago this weekend was a very big deal. After years of talking,
voting, pledging, waiting, constructing, and anticipating, we finally
got a chance to move into the brand new, huge Sanctuary. We had been cramped
each Sunday, worshiping in what is now Fellowship Hall. The choir filled
two lofts facing each other on either side of the front of the room. The
west door that now leads into the Sanctuary then led to an outside door.
Finally after much
debate and concern about being ready, it was decided that we would move
into the building that was originally supposed to be finished the previous
Easter. Pews were installed on Friday and Saturday, choir chairs were
unpacked and put in place on Friday. Lights were tested. Systems checked.
Carpets swept. Everything wasn't finished, but we would be able to walk
through that door into the mysterious land of the new kept off limits
to everyone during construction.
Sunday worship began
in the old room. It was filled with anticipation. Then, halfway through,
each packed worship service, the congregation formed a procession and
walked through the door into the new building. The crowd from the old
Sanctuary discovered it was just a small gathering in the new space. The
procession was led by former paster John Ward carrying the altar Bible.
We sang some songs, rejoiced in our new home and imagined what new experiences
we would have there. Over the next few weeks final touches were placed,
the organ was moved, the old Sanctuary was converted into what we know
now as Fellowship Hall and a formal consecration service, complete with
the Bishop and other high church officials, was held in February. The
corner stone was placed. That first Sunday morning also made the news.
Channel 2 set up a camera in the balcony and live pictures and an interview
with Carl were included in the Sunday morning newscast.
Below are a few random
memories that stick in my mind. Others in the choir have many more memories,
including Bass David Gnaegy who was chair of the building committee and
chief overseer of the project. My role on the building committee was keeping
the congregation informed during the process.
The Pew Crew -- We
all take pews for granted on Sunday morning. But, they don't happen by
accident. A few short days before our move, a small army of "pew
people" arrived from the pew builder to install our seats. They had
just finished seating for 16,000 at a church in Chicago so 1,200 here
wasn't a big deal for them. The pews were unloaded, positioned and each
bolted to the floor. They worked very fast. On Saturday afternoon the
head pew guy told everyone they were about the glue the brown end caps
on the end of each pew. They could not be touched for 24 hours or they
would come loose. Once loose, the wood grain would be sealed and they
would never stay stuck again. Gulp. We're having church in there tomorrow.
Every now and then you'll hear or see an end cap pop loose. He was right.
Chancel Chairs --
Kevin began calling choir members on Friday morning to help unpack the
chairs. Each choir chair was in a heavy box, covered in heavy plastic
and stacked in the Narthex where carpet installers were still laying the
carpet. Singers worked through the day to unbox and position 120 choir
chairs. It was a lot of work, but we got to see inside first.
The Birds -- Construction
is a messy business. Until the structure is closed in with windows and
doors, it's open to the elements and flying friends. Through most of the
"open" phases of construction, our Sanctuary was home to four
pigeons. These guys loved our new building. They made the steel beams
along the roof line their home. We even gave them names -- the four apostles.
They were unofficial members of the building committee and along with
our project managers, they worked very hard observing everything. But
as if on cue, they disappeared when the windows went in place.
The Beam -- During
construction, our south parking lot became a storage yard. Every imaginable
kind of building material took its turn resting there. There are two large
and long steel beams (longitudinal trusses) that run the length of the
Sanctuary just below the cove lights along the lower edges of the vaulted
sealing. These beams support the steel arches that hold the ceiling and
support the roof. On one Sunday morning while these beams relaxed in the
parking lot, an autograph party was held. Many of us signed the beams
and our messages and signatures now rest in the attic of the Sanctuary.
The Brush Hog -- The
Sanctuary occupies an area of church property once covered with trees.
There was a little driveway about where the Narthex is today. The Fellowship
Hall door immediately inside the new Narthex lead to a stairway to the
basement and an exterior door on the south. If you stood in that door,
you would see a small tool shed and a thick grove of trees. We knew construction
was starting on the day a huge cyclone brush hog arrived ready to consume
our forest. In less than a day, we could see Manchester Road from that
door.
The Tour -- About
half way through the project, people were getting curious about the new
building hidden behind the sheets of plastic over the doors and windows
in the old Sanctuary. The masses were kept out of the project by insurance
and safety concerns. But one Sunday, tours were conducted by building
committee members. The project was still very rough -- no wall board,
temporary lights hanging, water still dripping, exposed walls and dirt
everywhere. There was a lot of "imagine there is a wall here",
"yes, this is the . . .", "when we're finished there will
be a door here." The congregation loved it.
The Rose Window --
Building a church is like herding cats. Everybody has a different expectation,
image or vision of the finished project. David Gnaegy was an outstanding
leader and I often marveled at his ability to thoughtfully listen to the
most questionable idea and then make the answer "no" seem like
a welcome relief. Picture 15 committee members in a shell of the current
Sanctuary looking at samples of stained class propped against an unfinished
wall directly under an opening where the rose window is today. The window
maker had thoughtfully brought several versions of the window. Some bright
as you would expect a stained class window to be. Some very subtle, with
only a hint of color. Some varying facets of only clear class. The architect
was careful to explain the academic reasoning behind the design of the
building and strongly suggest the choice true to the Federalist design.
There was discussion, debate, questions. There was walking around and
staring up at the open circle in the wall. We could have had a bright,
multicolored rose window you would see in a cathedral in Europe. We almost
had a window of clear class facets that would catch the sun in different
angles. But, the architect prevailed. The current window with subtle shades
of pink and clear class is true to the buildings design.
The Interior -- Anyone
who has remodeled a kitchen or built an addition to a home remembers looking
at the samples -- carpet, paint, flooring, marble and trying to imagine
what it would look like scaled up in real world size. It's hard for most
to imagine. On a spring evening the building committee gathered in the
old Chapel for a meeting with the architect. Across the front of the room
on display were samples of the stuff that makes a hall a church -- carpet,
paint, pictures of pews, marble flooring. The architect carefully went
through the options and offered suggestions about what would look good.
He had to caution that unless you were used to outfitting large spaces,
you couldn't think of a room in your house. Carl, our senior pastor, appeared
fascinated by this process. In fact, I remember him stretching out in
the center aisle of the chapel to get a better look at the samples. Votes
were taken, colors were picked.
The Vinyl Siding --
If you drive along old Highway 141 on the east side of the church and
look at the building, you'll see a large area of vinyl siding in the middle
of the brick wall. No, they didn't run out of bricks. The original plan
called for the church to be connected to a future family life center proposed
east of the new Sanctuary. The idea was for the Narthex to extend into
a lobby for that building and end in a similar entrance on the east side
of the building forming a kind of mall. The east wall was completed without
masonry so that connection could be made someday. Unfortunately rule changes
by MSD required that we build a large detention basin in the southeast
corner of the property where part of that family life center would have
been located. The vinyl siding remains.
The Sound -- I can
still remember the first time the choir tried singing in the new chancel.
We just looked at each other and muttered, hugh? It was so big, so muted
and so lonely. In other words, we couldn't hear ourselves. It meant we
would have to sing out, have more energy and pretend we were singing at
a big church -- because we were. Very soon after Christmas, Kevin had
a "test" evening when the choir was brought into the new space
and a test recording were made so we could hear ourselves (and become
convinced we sounded okay even though we couldn't hear ourselves). I still
have that recording. It took some getting used to and finally convincing
our tech friends that we indeed did need to hear ourselves. The better
the monitors, the better the singing.

is difficult if you leave some of your music at home. Fall music packets
should be returned as soon as possible. A content list for the fall packet
is available to help you gather the correct music.
Winter Weather
Tis the season for bad weather. Generally, Kevin holds necessary rehearsals
when scheduled. But, sometimes the weather is too treacherous for some.
Cancellation notices are posted on the choir's web site. A "weather

see the alert. You won't need a password to get weather alerts.
Care Is Needed To Avoid Computer Viruses During The Holidays
The holidays can bring out the worst in people and that includes theft
and computer attacks. There have been several reports of a phishing attempt
circulating through emails. Phishing is an attempt to acquire sensitive
information such as usernames, passwords and other account details by
a spammer posing as a legitimate entity. This particular phishing attempt
appears under the guise of Hallmark Cards, Inc.
Be on alert for an
email that contains:
-- Subject: “You’ve received a Hallmark E-Card!”
-- Message: “You have received a Hallmark E-Card from your friend.
To see it, check the attachment. There’s something special about
that E-Card feeling. We invite you to make a friend’s day and send
one.”
-- Hallmark banner and links
-- Zip file attachment
If you receive a message
that fits the above description, immediately delete the message. Do not
click any links or open the attachment. After deleting the message, empty
your “trash” or “deleted emails” from your email
application. If you’re concerned about how to recognize legitimate
e-cards during this holiday time, visit http://corporate.hallmark.com/Current-News/E-Card-Awareness
for details. Hallmark provides information on how to tell if an e-card
notification is real.
Tips for Keeping
Your Email Account Safe
-- Never send your
password via email.
-- Never respond
to a message that looks suspicious or is from a sender whose identity
you’re unsure of, even if it’s just to ask if it is legitimate.
-- Read the
email carefully. Many phishing attempts are poorly written, containing
poor grammar and spelling mistakes.
-- Do not click
on a link or open an attachment in an email from an unknown source. Your
account can be hijacked or you can get a virus on your computer by clicking
on a link or opening an attachment in an email. If you are even slightly
suspicious of the email, DO NOT click any links or open any attachments.
-- Be skeptical. Don’t be fooled by personalized messages, web pages
or images in an email, they are all easily faked.

sets on display in the Narthex, and we'll perform a commissioned piece
written for the 10th anniversary of our Sanctuary. Also, Kevin reports
that two "major, big, surprise" announcements will be made at

And this week is party night. All good reasons to show up this week.

members to help him test out the kitchen and bar. The Brickhouse Pub at
Highway 109 and Old Manchester Road will officially open for business
on Monday, Dec. 1. But, the staff needs training and that's where we come
in. Jeff is inviting us to help with the training following this schedule:
Friday, Nov. 28, 5 p.m. until 1 a.m. -- Pub is open, drinks and free appetizers.
Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 29 and 30, 11 a.m. until 1 a.m. -- Family &
Friends Days (training mode) all food is half price.
Directions: Go west on Manchester Road to Highway 109, turn south. Proceed

mile. The restaurant is on the right.

an occasional fix it project. Earlier this year, the choir voted to purchase
a large screen TV for the church's homeless program. A group of choir
folks worked at Centenary on Wednesday. Below are some photos of their
effort and a look at that television we provided.

Members Shine in Uncle Phil's Diner
If you missed the Drama Ministry's performance of Uncle Phil's Diner this
weekend, you missed seeing several members of Chancel Choir doing their
dramatic thing, and singing and dancing on stage. It was an outstanding
production. Chancel Choir members in the show included: Bonnie Halls,
Kristie Whitney, Fran McMillian, Buddy Rains, Chris Kennedy, Carol Lembke
and Stephanie Merritt. Each night unsuspecting members of the audience
-- especially those who attended the event in 1950's costumes -- were
ushered on stage for two numbers. On Sunday night Barb Barrett and Jim
Belval had the honors. Below are some photos from my table on Sunday night.

Soprano Sue Lemley's mother has been placed in hospice care in Ohio.
Note from Betty Gnaegy:
"Your gorgeous mum arrived almost the first day of my unexpected
stay and surgery in St. Luke's, and its buds were still partially closed.
Everyday following, it opened a bit more and became more lovely, giving
me pleasure the entire time at St. Luke's and subsequently at Surrey Place
for rehab. Many, many thanks. Your love and support meant a great deal.
I am now regaining strength, albeit more slowly than I would like, and
Connie is showing slight improvement following his stroke. So God is watching
over us. Much love to all of you as you sing His praise."

Cares and

This from Bass Jim Starbuck:
"I have been remiss in not thanking the choir regarding the neat
plant I received following surgery. I am also thankful for the prayers
on my behalf. Many have been surprised (including me) at my speedy recovery
and I hope it will give comfort to others who may face the same treatment
in the future. I understand that the device I have is an improvement over
others used not too long ago. As the renowned St. Louis philosopher, Yogi,
might say, 'I'm blessed that a fork in the road has brought me to the
Chancel Choir and MUMC.' "
It’s a boy for
the first grand child for Alto Pam and Tenor Mike Campbell. Gabe Alexander
Coleman arrived in Charlotte, N.C., on Sunday, Nov. 1, to help celebrate
