Choir Update 6/27: Cares and Concerns
Pam
Nicholson, wife of Tenor Steve Nicholson, has sent the
note below to the choir:
Dear Friends,
I had a check-up with my oncologist recently and I had an elevated CA125
(Three months ago=13, base line=35, June = 109). I had a CAT scan at Barnes
which was somewhat inconclusive. I am having further tests to determine
if I do need to start chemo. If I do have to have chemo again, I am hopeful
it will less harsh than last time. Now, I am not recovering from major
surgery and am feeling strong. I know what to expect and know what I can
and cannot do about side-effects. Just as important, I know the power
of good friends with caring souls.
I should know more
within ten days and will send out another e-mail then. I hope you will
forgive me for this impersonal way to communicate with you. I am in a
state of semi-shock now so please forward this note to anyone you wish.
Thank you in advance for your thoughts and prayers. I ask that you remember
Steve and Katie because this is a difficult time for them too.
Love, Pam Nicholson
Pam underwent surgery in May 2006 to remove a large malignant mass from
her abdomen. Her address is: 1952 Ridge Lake, Chesterfield, MO 63017.

Cares and
Concerns
This from Tenor Tim Zink:
"It has taken a little while to get my feet back under me since Dad
passed away. I want you to know that my family felt your love and support
through your calls, your cards and your prayers. There are a couple of
important things to share about his passing. Dad’s mind was sharp
to the end. On the Saturday before he died, staff at the rehabilitation
center had to do a mental evaluation as part of the process to get him
ready to come back home. When they asked if he could recite the alphabet,
Dad asked if it was all right to do it backwards, and then did. The chart
entry was, “No problem.” Second, Dad’s biggest concern
was to linger in a nursing home as he had seen happen to his dad and mom.
We are thankful that his concern did not become a reality.
"Dad’s mind and fighting spirit were with him to the end. The
only thing that finally failed was his body. God blessed us and we had
Dad with us until he was 90. We are now blessed to have his spirit with
us always. I have drawn strength and reassurance from the second book
of Timothy, Chapter 2, vs. 1-7. If you want to ask me why, I can honor
my father by telling you a part of his story. Thank you, God bless each
of you, and as Jesus commanded, love one another."

Choir Update 6/11/07: News / Cares and Concerns
Retreat at Touhill Center, Classic Christmas and Easter Hits Set
For Next Year
When Kevin announced plans for next year's Chancel Choir programming,
several rounds of aaaaahhhhhhs rose from the tables at Saturday night's
end-of-year choir party at the home of Alto Bonny Halls.
Scheduling this fall's choir retreat on the stage of the Blanch Touhill
Center for the Performing Arts at UMSL drew the biggest reaction.
The
choir will rehearse in the Touhill Center all day, Saturday, Sept. 29.
The Friday evening retreat session will be held at the church this year.
Kevin explained that due to a mix up at Todd Hall in Columbia, Ill., two
groups had been booked at the center for both of the two weekends we had
considered for our fall retreat. "We'll definately go to Todd Hall
in the future," Kevin explained. However for this year we are able
to use the Touhill Center for the retreat. The Touhill is one of the finest
concert halls in the region and "we're lucky to have arranged to
rehearse there," Kevin said.
The year will also feature a concert of classic Christmas music on Dec.
16 featuring two new compositions by Mark Hayes including his recently
debuted Magnificat and a spring concert entitled A Mass For
Our Time on March 2 presenting "the best of our requiems"
with selections from the Mozart, Fauré, Lloyd Webber, Rutter and
Brahams requiems. The Chancel Choir's bi-annual Fall Follies fund raiser
will be performed on Oct. 27 and will include swing music, talent acts
and Broadway selections. The choir will split into four worship ensembles
again this year on Oct. 14 for our annual Music Mission Sunday outreach
to St. Louis churches.
All of this, plus the big tour to Washington, D.C. next Memorial Day weekend
with a concert at Kennedy Center will mean a year packed with programming
that will bring the best of worship music to the Manchester United Methodist
Church chancel.
Official Wall Calendar Lists All Programming For Next Season
If you were missing on Saturday night, you'll want to stop by the Music
Room sometime in the next few days and pick up your copy of the official
Chancel Choir wall calendar for the 2007-2008 choir season. You'll find
all of the concerts, events and outreach activities for next year marked
on the calendar and every singer's birthday is also listed. In addition,
more than 200 color photos of choir members taken during the past year
are included. Enough calendars were printed so every singer or choir household
may have one. The calendar was produced again this year by Soprano
Mary Dean and Bass Gary Ford. Cost of the calendar
was covered by the contributions collected earlier this spring.
Choir Support Staff Recognized For Tireless Work
As recognition of their special contribution to the Chancel Choir, members
of the support staff were recognized by Kevin at the end-of-year party
Saturday night. Gift cards were presented to the Chancel Choir's librarians,
accompanists and wardrobe director.

Chancel Choir Update 6/4/07: Important News / Scholarship Winners
12th Annual Choir Scholarship Awarded to Three Seniors
It was a surprise announcement for youth seeking the Chancel Choir Scholarship
in more ways that one -- this year the choir present three scholarships
instead of one.
During the 9 a.m. worship service, a $2,000 scholarship was presented
to Katy Maestas and $1,000 scholarships were presented to Nancy Stiles
and Pat Niday. Kevin made the presentation, substituting for vice president
Tenor Tim Zink who served as chair of the scholarship
committee this year. Nancy was not present at worship on Sunday to receive
her scholarship. Kevin announced the winners at the 10:30 a.m. served.
Katy
is the daughter of Dan and Bobbi Maestas; Pat is the son of Scott and
Kim Niday; and Nancy is the daughter of Scott and Kay Stiles. Both Katie
and Pat will attend Truman State University in the fall.
During
the break between services, both Katy and Pat came to the Music Room and
thanked the choir for their scholarships.
Earlier
this spring, Chancel Choir officers approved granting a second scholarship
if the there were two worthy candidates during this year's scholarship
competition. During the screening process, members of the scholarship
committee decided to split the second $2,000 award between Pat Niday and
Nancy Stiles. The three recipients were the only applicants this year.
Going forward, officers authorized granting two scholarships if funds
are available and there are two worthy candidates.
The annual Chancel Choir scholarship is presented to a graduating senior
each spring. The selection process begins in March with applications and
ends with extensive interviews in May. The selection committee is chaired
each year by the choir’s vice president/president elect.

on FeeFee Road in Creve Coeur. Alto Margo Foster will
get there at 1 p.m. and save a table. Let he know if you are joining by
calling 636-527-2107.

Choir Update 6/1: News / Cares and Concerns
Rockin' Sunday Morning In The Loft
The Chancel Choir, accompanied by a with a jazz combo, will present
several gospel numbers from our Swingin' The Night Away concert at the
9 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. worship services this Sunday. It's Pentecost Sunday
and the choir will wear red shirts instead of robes. Let's repeat that.
The Chancel Choir will wear RED SHIRTS on Sunday instead of robes. The
Chancel Choir youth scholarship winner will be announced on Sunday. This
is the last Sunday morning of the Chancel Choir season.
Thursday Night
Dinners Begin This Week
The Chancel Choir's annual summer traveling dinners will begin this Thursday
evening, June 7. Each summer the choir has dinner at a local restaurant
on Thursday nights at 6:30 p.m. Traditionally, the first dinner of the
summer is at the Applebee's in Ballwin. Location for the next dinner is
announced at the dinner each Thursday night and by email. If you wish
to join us this Thursday, we must have your reservation by Wednesday,
June 6. (But the sooner we hear from you, the better.) Reservations for
the summer dinners are an absolute necessity because of the size of the
group and restaurant limitations. We often start a waiting list for cancellations.
So, if you wish to attend, please let us know by the deadline each week
-- this time on or before Wednesday, June 6. If your plans change and
you can't attend, please let us know so we can fill your seat from the
waiting list. You may make reservations by replying to this email or calling
Sandy Ford, the Chancel Choir's social director, at 636-227-5749.
Next Season
Plans Will Be Announced At Party June 9
The rest of next season's surprises won't be known until our end-of-season
party on June 9. The Chancel Choir's official printed wall calendar will
be distributed. The party begins at 5:30 p.m., June 9, again at the home
of Alto Bonnie Halls. Complete details on the location,
driving directions and parking instructions will be provided next week.
Bonnie says to bring a dish to share that serves 10 to 12 people and a
lawn chair to be "guaranteed a seat" at the party. This year
we will begin eating as quickly after 5:30 as possible.
New Officers
Election Will Be Held At The Year End Party
Normally the Chancel Choir's potential new officers for the coming year
are presented to the choir as a "slate" by the incoming president
in early May and the choir is given a week to think about them and a vote
of approval is taken by the end of May. An officer "installation"
is held at the end of year party. Time got away from this year's incoming
president, so the new officer slate appears below and the election will
be held at the choir party.
President -- Tim Zink
Vice-President/President Elect -- Ann Garber
Recording Secretary -- Donna Biolchini
Attendance Secretary -- Kristie Whitney

Normally we don't send out links, lists or letters to the choir email
unless it pertains directly to the Chancel Choir. But, for educational
reasons, I am making an exception this time. Below is a link to a YouTube
video clip of the Turtle Creek Chorale singing the Hallelujah Chorus in
a new and innovative way. You'll want to take a couple of minutes to see

Chancel Choir Sings For Two Services Sunday
The Chancel Choir will be in the loft for both the 9 a.m. and
10:30 a.m. worship services Sunday. Call time is 8:30 a.m. in the Music
Room. Anthems: O Breath of Life and Keep Your Lamps.
Chancel Choir
Will Sing at Kennedy Center During Tour To Washington Next Year
Kevin finally made the announcement last night. The Chancel Choir will
sing at Kennedy Center on Saturday, May 24, 2008 during a tour to Washington,
D.C., followed by a dinner cruise on the Potomac River. The tour will
also include participation in the changing of the wreath at the Tomb of
the Unknowns and Arlington National Cemetery on Friday, May 23; worship
at the National Cathedral on Sunday, May 25; and the PBS Memorial Day
concert on the Capitol lawn on Sunday evening, May 25. We will travel
as a group to Washington on Thursday, May 22 and return on Memorial Day,
Monday, May 26. We will stay at the Hilton Washington Hotel located near
the Dupont Circle Metro Station. The tour will be structured very much
like our previous tours to New York, but will be handled by a different
touring company headed by former staff member of the New York tour operator.
Cost of the tour will be similar to our New York trips. The estimated
cost of the ground package with four people to a room is $900. As the
number of people in a room decreases, the cost per individual increases.
Air transportation is estimated at $330 per person. Final costs will not
be known until later this year.
In additional to the
Chancel Choir, the tour is also open to members of Metro Singers, the
St. Louis singing group that Kevin also directs, and a church choir in
Memphis, Tenn. Kevin will direct the Kennedy Center performance of Randall
Thompson's Testament of Freedom and possibly one other selection. A pre-tour
concert will be presented in our Sanctuary on Sunday, May 18. Kevin circulated
a signup sheet last night asking anyone to sign up if they were at all
interested in the trip. This indication is for planning purposes only
and does not commit you to the trip yet. An initial deposit will be collected
next fall. If you (and a spouse, friend or family member) are interest
in making the trip, please sign up on Sunday in the Music Room or send
a note to Kevin at: kevin.mcbeth@manchesterumc.org.
Kevin said he made
the announcement to the Chancel Choir early because he told the Metro
Singer's Board of Directors about the trip on Tuesday night and feared
word would filter back to the Chancel Choir. The Metro Singers end of
year annual meeting is this week. Additional details about the trip will
be announced as they become available. DC here we come. Kennedy Center
has been waiting for a group as good as us (right?).

Choir Update 5/22: Very Important News
Chancel Choir Rehearsal Thursday Night
We'll all be back at work Thursday night preparing for the rest
of the choir season including Pentecost Sunday on June 3. See you then.
Where Are
We Going in 2008? Find Out Thursday Night
Kevin says he can't stand the tension anymore. So, he's spilling the beans
Thursday night. Not to mention that he also needs to get an early indication
of how many of us will be participating in the special Memorial Day 2008
tour so the tour company can begin preparing the trip. You've heard the
rumors. You've guessed at the destination. Even if some of you have guessed
correctly, you don't know all of the amazing details that have developed
in the last few weeks. If you come to choir Thursday night all will be
revealed unto you. Kevin still plans to announce the other special events
planned for next year at the Chancel Choir end-of-year party on June 9
including our music mission outreach for next year, our concerts, and
a special program. The official Chancel Choir calendar will be available
that night too.
Notes From
The Road -- A Weekend In Cincinnati
For the 58 singers, 15 groupies and four support staff who made the trip
to Cincinnati over the weekend, it was probably the best regional tour
the Chancel Choir has made so far. The trip had everything going for it,
perfect weather, flawless execution, appreciative audiences, opportunities
for fellowship and outreach, and a little fun thrown in as well. Here
are some brief "notes from the road."
-- After an on time
departure Friday afternoon and a blazing trip down Highway 40 toward the
Arch, the buses spent more than half an hour in downtown St. Louis stalled
for construction at the Broadway exit and more delays for construction
in Illinois at the I-70 junction.
-- Stops were made in both directions at Effingham, Ill. and Plainfield,
Ind., just this side of Indianapolis. We dined on all varieties of fast
food on the trip. But, the food got much better after we arrived in Cincinnati.
-- No luggage was lost, no one was injured, no one got sick. In case of
emergencies, we had our Chancel Choir surgeon and two ordained clergy
with us to handle any concerns of the body and soul (notice I left mind
out of this equation).
-- More than 300 residents of the Otterbein Retirement Center at Lebanon,
Ind., filled the facility's chapel to overflowing for our concert Saturday
night. The concert was also broadcast on closed circuit television. Present
in the audience was Helen Harbaugh, recently widowed mother of MUMC staff
member Steve Harbaugh. The choir dedicated "How Great Thou Art"
to the memory of Steve's father, John Harbaugh.
-- Following the concert and the 45-minute drive back to Cincinnati, choir
members raided the restaurants. Earlier in the day, groups toured the
National Underground Railroad Freedom Center and the Newport Aquarium,
both interesting sights.
-- Worship at Calvary Episcopal Church in the Clifton area of Cincinnati
on Sunday morning was notably "high church" complete with communion
wafers, plenty of ritual and altar boys (excuse me its altar people now).
-- Calvary is the Sunday "digs" of noted composer Howard Helvey
who directed us, along with his 24 voice choir, in two of the six songs
we sang in church. Howard sat at the organ during the service in which
the church's humorous and energetic Rector reminded the congregation and
us that John Wesley started out as an Episcopalian. He continued to make
references to Wesley and Methodists throughout the morning.
-- Meals were the big entertainment, as always. One group got a private
dining room at Morton's Steakhouse, three other groups were seen eating
in one of Cincinnati's tony fish places across from Fountain Square, two
groups ate lunch at a German Beer Garden on Saturday. After the German
meal was delayed, the manager come out and apologized for an unfortunate
"incident in the kitchen," comped lunch for everyone, and gave
us certificates for another free meal. We never did learn what that kitchen
incident was.
-- Don't try to eat Cincinnati's famous Skyline Chili downtown on Sunday
morning. A small group walked six blocks only to find the chili shop closed.
-- Celebrity sightings: yes, you can see a celebrity in Cincinnati. How
about Jerry Springer in the hotel bar having a good time visiting with
guests. Or how about a bus load of NFL Hall of Fame members walking across
the hotel lobby on the way to a charity golf tournament. "Those guys
look familiar," we said. Then we found out who they were -- including
Mean Joe Green. We saw an American Idol runner up from two years ago warming
up for an outdoor concert and fashion show in front of Macy's at Fountain
Square. She sounded good, even if Simon Cowell didn't think so.
-- The most notable incident of the trip was leaving Chancel Choir
President Chris Kennedy on the curb in downtown Cincinnati Saturday
night as the buses pulled away for Otterbein Retirement Center. Since
Chris drove to Ohio, he wasn't a fixture on the bus. He was asked to linger
a little longer in the hotel lobby a floor above the street to make sure
any stragglers know to go downstairs to the bus. Unfortunately that word
didn't make it to the bus captain. The nice people at Otterbein offered
to make the 45 minute trip into town to pick up Chris and family, who
made the drive themselves arriving in plenty of time for the concert.
-- The Hilton Hotel in downtown Cincinnati is located in an historic Art
Deco building which has been fully restored to its original kitschy luster.
Apparently people were a lot smaller when the hotel was built in the early
1930s because our rooms were tiny -- even smaller than the rooms we had
in London a couple of years ago. But all of us didn't have that experience.
Kevin, as tour leader, got a suite provided by the hotel. A quick survey
revealed that six of our hotel rooms could easily fit inside his two room
suite. In fact, his suite kind of reminded me of my grandmother's farm
house in Kansas.
-- World renowned composer Howard Helvey was pressed into duty as a personal
shopper on Saturday when it was discovered that one of our support staff
brought no black shoes for the concert or church. Howard led a shopping
expedition.
-- From our funny trip trivia department. Here's the most memorable questions
asked by tour members during and before the trip:
"Should I unload my luggage before or after I park my car?"
"How long will it take me to eat a meal if we only stop for 45 minutes?"
"So high church doesn't have anything to do with what people wear?"
"Can you chew a communion wafer or should you swallow it whole?"
"Do you think Paris Hilton was ever in this hotel?"
"If check out time is 1 o'clock, how will they know that I have left?"

Cincinnati Tour Rehearsal Thursday Night
If you're headed to Cincinnati with the choir this weekend, you'll
need to attend rehearsal at 7:30 p.m. this Thursday night in the Music
Room. If you aren't going on the tour, you've got the night off. You also
have Sunday off too since the rest of us will be singing in Ohio Sunday
morning. We'd recommend you come to church on Sunday anyway. On Thursday
night we'll rehearse music for the tour and hear any last minute trip
details.
Chancel Choir Update 5/11: News / Cares and Concerns
Choir Will Sing For Both Services Sunday
As usual, the choir will sing for both the 9 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.
worship services this Sunday. Call time is 8:30 a.m. in the Music Room.
Anthem: How Great Thou Art.
Tour Costs
For Cincinnati Now Due
If you are registered to make the trip with us to Cincinnati next week,
you're money is now due to Chancel Choir Treasurer Tom Lawrence prior
to our departure. Although the costs appeared in the rehearsal guide last
night, here is a more complete list of the amounts you owe. Remember the
hotel costs $140 per night (we're there two nights). Transportation cost
for singers is $32 and for nonsingers it is $64. Remember, the choir is
subsidizing half the transportation costs for choir members. So, here's
the break down of the total costs for the two nights, based on number
of people in a room for the two nights. The amounts are for each person
for the total trip based on the number of people staying in your room:
With no transportation,
if you're driving, flying or whatever:
Two people to a room -- Singer: $140 Non singer: $140
With bus transportation:
Two people to a room -- Singer: $172 Non Singer: $204
Three people to a room -- Singer: $126 Non Singer: $158
Four people to a room -- Singer: $102 Non Singer: $134
Direct any questions
to Tom Lawrence at twlawr@swbell.net. Complete tour packets were distributed
last night. If you are going on the tour and were not there last night,
you'll need to pick up this information.
Tour Singers
Rehearse Next Thursday Night
Choir members not going on the Cincinnati tour next week have next Thursday
and next Sunday morning off. Rehearsal next week is for tour singers only
to prepare for the concert and worship in Cincinnati. However, this does
not mean the choir season is over. All choir members are expected to resume
rehearsals on May 24.
Season Finale
Party Is June 9
You'll want to attend our finale party this year. That's when Kevin will
reveal the destination for the big Mystery Tour on Memorial Day weekend
2008. There's been a lot of rumors, but no one knows for sure where we're
headed and Kevin isn't talking yet. He does admit it will be a "big
deal" and we will be talking about it for years -- just like we did
after our first trip to New York. It's big. The party begins at 5:30 p.m.,
again at the home of Alto Bonnie Halls. Complete details on the party,
location, driving direction and parking instruction will be provided later.
This year we will begin eating as quickly after 5:30 as possible.
Chancel Choir
Charity Activities
Normally we do not promote charities outside the church in the email updates.
In fact, choir officers have adopted a formal policy on what we will promoted
in the email messages to choir members. Last night, choir members announced
their involvement in two fund raisers and encouraged participation through
sponsorships. One was for the MoHab Riders who raise money for the church's
Habitat For Humanity home building projects by taking a very long bicycle
ride somewhere, this year 250 miles on June 9. Six choir members (Ed Brueggman,
David Schenck, Lois Henderson, Sue Woolweaver, and Joan and John Lemen)
will participate. You can visit with any one of them about making a contribution
to this cause. Alto Karen Yeomans reported her participation in a hike
for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society sponsored by Ben & Jerry's
ice cream. If you buy ice cream at the Ben & Jerry's in Chesterfield
on May 16 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., 20 percent of your purchase will go
to sponsor Karen. Going forward, we will follow the communications policy
which is available for your review at the link below. This is to limit
the amount of non-choir related information sent by email so members will
welcome our occassional updates. Of course, any activity may be announced
from the floor at a rehearsal. You can check with Kevin about that. Here's
a link to the email communications policy: http://www.mumchancelchoir.org/Member/Notes/communicationspolicy.htm
Potential
Choir Officers For Next Year Please Step Forward
We're having an installation of officers on June 9 and we'll be needing
a list of new officers to install. If you're interested in helping our
choir out by attending monthly officer meetings and helping with projects,
please let president elect Tenor Tim Zink know. Each spring the incoming
president identifies a list of officers for the coming year. This list
is presented to the choir in late May for its endorsement. You're name
could be on that list. Contact Tim at: timnlor@charter.net
Cares and
Concerns
Baritone Ed Brueggman reports that his wife, Alice, has been
diagnosed with Meniere's disease, a chronic disorder of the inner ear
that results in repeated episodes of dizziness and reduced motor function.
She is the mother-in-law of Soprano Sarah Brueggman.
Alto June Van
Klaveren reports that her husband, Larry, is undergoing surgery
this morning at St. John's Mercy Medical Center to repair a hernia. He
will return home later today for recuperation.
Chancel Choir Update 5/8: News You Can Use / Cares and Concerns
Important Rehearsal This Week
The rehearsal this Thursday is for the entire Chancel Choir and
it would be helpful if you could join us. Kevin will work on music for
the remainder of the spring. Since the following Thursday, May 17, will
be a rehearsal just for singers going on tour to Ohio, this week's rehearsal
is very important.
Help Needed
For Centenary Kitchen Duty
Alto Barb Farmer needs some help with the Chancel Choir's turn in the
Centenary United Methodist Church food kitchen on Wednesday, May 16. If
you can help, please either let her know at bfarmmo@sbcglobal.net or sign
up at rehearsal Thursday night. The choir provides assistance with meal
service for the homeless one Wednesday each month. No food preparation
experience is required -- just four hours between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. The
church is located at 16th and Pine downtown and the group car pools from
our church parking lot.
Cares and
Concerns
Baritone Moe Parisien will undergo eye surgery Thursday to remove
an obstruction from a tear duct.
Alto Fran McMillian is ready for some company to visit
her in the hospital. Fran is recovering from abdominal surgery in room
681 at Missouri Baptist Medical Center. According to husband, Mac, she
would like some company in the afternoon and early evening.
Tenor David Schenck told the Coventry Choir last night
that he is engaged to be married on Sept. 29. He is the son of Alto
Becky Schenck and Senior Pastor Carl Schenck. The bride currently
lives in Minnesota, but is headed our way soon.
Final Destination
For National Tour in 2008
There's been a lot of speculation recently about the destination for our
big national choir tour over Memorial Day Weekend next year. Several people
believe they have it figured out or think they know the "real truth"
about where we're headed. We can assure you, there are several surprises
in store and Kevin is playing this one very close just to increase the
curiosity and make it more fun. Chances are if you think you know, you
probably don't. The destination of the tour will be announced at the Chancel
Choir end of season party on June 9. However, many of you may have not
heard all of the rumors regarding the tour itinerary. As a service to
our members, here's a summary of the most discussed rumors circulating
around the loft.
Miami, Florida
-- A recent rumor that we are headed to Miami next year has picked
up steam recently. After all, Kevin did spend almost a week in Florida
earlier this spring at a huge music director's convention and he's connected
with a lot of music people everywhere. This possibility is even more appealing
when you consider a local religious music festival in Miami at the Orange
Bowl Stadium. The Chancel Choir could easily be a headline act at a festival
over Memorial Day weekend next year. This could be combined with a short
bus ride to Orlando and a couple of days at Disney World, maybe even singing
on Main Street on Memorial Day. Mickey Mouse could even direct us (we
respond well to this kind of leadership . . .) Those walking shoes will
come in handy at Epcot. This is one of the more plausible of the rumors.
Honolulu,
Hawaii -- Wouldn't you know it. The Polynesian Culture Center
on the island of Oahu (north of Honolulu) is an institution of the Mormon
Church and we all know how much they like choir music. In fact, Kevin
and at least one other member of the choir has been in close contact with
them in recent months. So, if there was ever a possibility of a choral
music festival at the Polynesian Culture Center wouldn't it stand to reason
that one of the largest United Methodist Church choirs would be invited
to perform by the church with the largest church choir in the country?
Think about it. No passport needed for Hawaii and we could walk all over
the place -- maybe even head for a side trip to Maui. Can't wait for this
one.
Washington,
D.C. -- Nothing like a visit to the capitol during an election
year. But still time to tour while the great decider is in office. There
are any number of places we could sing, like the World War II Memorial
or somewhere on the Mall. Only downside to this is that there are literally
thousands of veterans in D.C. during Memorial Day weekend. We'd need a
VFW card just to get near the place. We could sing a concert at the Smithsonian
-- I think they have an exhibit dedicated to old church choir directors
there. We also have a direct connection into the U.S. Marine Band that
might lead to an appearance in a parade or as backup singers at a state
funeral, but the scheduling might be a little iffy. We're not aware of
any music festivals there, but somebody would surely listen to us sing.
Maybe the Queen of England will return next year. I'll keep this one on
my list of possibilities, but my personal favorite for the tour appears
below.
Tombstone,
Arizona -- As it happens, during Memorial Day weekend of 2008
there's a choral music festival featuring music of the American pioneer
during the westward expansion (does that ring a bell for you Arch fans?).
Singing groups from throughout the west, including church choirs, will
be performing at the Bird Cage Theater in Tombstone that weekend. Wouldn't
it stand to reason that a polished church choir from back in St. Louie
where the westward trek began would be a logical addition to such a great
event? We would fly into Tucson, board motor coaches for the short ride
to Tombstone, "the town too tough to die." We'd stay at the
Tombstone Motel, originally built in 1880, newly remodeled with many rooms
added, it is the largest motel in Cochise County. When not rehearsing
at the Bird Cage, we could take in the sights like the OK Corral. You
remember the OK Corral, this is where the Earps and Doc Holliday murdered
Billy Clanton and Tom and Frank McLaury on Oct. 26, 1881. There's also
the Clanton General Store, the Golden Eagle Saloon, the Boot Hill Graveyard
and Gift Shop, and my favorite, the office of the city newspaper, The
Tombstone Epitaph (no joke, I've been there). It's an important part of
American history and we could be a part of history too, singing the church
music of our pioneer fathers. There would be some walking involved, since
motor coaches can't negotiate unpaved streets. No passport needed for
arrival in Tombstone, but you might need one to leave. I say we begin
by brushing up on Bringing In The Sheaves.
Are any of these rumor
true? Probably not. You'll just have to wait until June 9 to learn what
everybody will be talking about next year.

Check Your
Calendar -- Fall Retreat Schedule Change
This fall the annual Chancel Choir Retreat will move back to Todd Hall
in Columbia, Ill. This popular location was the site of many retreats
until we outgrew the facility. Now Todd Hall has expanded and the retreat
this October will return there. However, Kevin reported at rehearsal last
night that a mix up in the original schedule is requiring that we hold
the retreat this year one week earlier than our normal first weekend in
October schedule. This means that our retreat will be held on Friday and
Saturday, Sept. 28 and 29 this fall. Kevin would like to know how many
people this would negatively affect and asks that you check your calendar
and report back to him if you are not available that weekend. Email him
at: kevin.mcbeth@manchesterumc.org if you have a conflict.

Help Is Needed
To Serve Lunch At Centenary on Wednesday
As you know, the Chancel Choir has committed to staffing the kitchen at
Centenary United Methodist Church downtown on one Wednesday a month. This
Wednesday is our turn and we need help. Alto Barb Farmer is in charge
of this project. If you can spare four hours on Wednesday between 10 a.m.

need to know how to cook -- everything you'll need and all of the instructions
necessary will be provided by the Centenary kitchen staff. It's actually
fun and an enjoyable experience, plus you will be helping the Chancel
Choir continue its outreach ministry to local and regional churches. If
you can help, contact Barb Farmer at: bfarmmo@sbcglobal.net or call her

Choir Approves
Subsidizing Half The Tour Transportation Costs For Choir Members
By a substantial margin, Chancel Choir members voted at rehearsal last
night to pay for half the bus transportation costs for Chancel Choir members
participating in the outreach tour to Cincinnati next month. Choir officers
had originally proposed paying for the entire cost of charting the buses
from the choir treasury. When objections were heard from choir members,
officers told the choir last week they would come up with an alternate
proposal and offer it for a vote this week. Officers were told at their
meeting prior to rehearsal last night that the church administration had
told Kevin it felt we had not been clear in our fund raising publicity
how money raised at our concerts would be used. Although for several years
publicity for our fundraisers has stated that the money would be used
for youth scholarships and outreach activities, church administration
felt contributors might not realize their contributions were going to
pay for tour transportation. After a lengthy discussion, officers agreed
that our regional tours made every other year were outreach to struggling
and smaller congregations in the cities we visit and not merely entertainment
excursions for the choir. They also agreed that partial subsidy of the
transportation was appropriate. Longer trips to Great Britain and New
York have not been classified as outreach and choir members have paid
for those costs on their own with no choir treasury money being used.
Officers pointed out that the treasury subsidized transportation for an
outreach tour to Kansas City a few years ago. On those occasions when
sufficient funds are available, officers felt money could be used for
outreach tour transportation if officers agreed and if the choir voted
its approval. Going forward, a more specific policy detailing potential
uses for funds raised will be drafted. Officers then approved presenting
the choir with two proposals: pay 50 percent of the individual choir member's
transportation cost for the Cincinnati tour or not subsidize the trip
at all. During rehearsal choir president Chris Kennedy presented the choir
with the two proposals and conducted a paper ballot vote. With 89 members
present, 74 voted for the subsidy and 15 voted for no subsidy. The actual
cost for transportation will be determined by the final number of singers
participating and the size of the buses needed and will range from $55
to $65 per person. Choir members who would rather pay the entire cost
are welcome to do so. Spouses, significant others, and family members
riding the buses will be expected to pay the full cost for their transportation.

spring. The Good News Quartet has been a part of the church's music program
for nearly 50 years. A search for a new baritone will be conducted later
this year.

Tour Transportation
Subsidy Vote Thursday Night
Chancel Choir officers have proposed that the Chancel Choir treasury subsidize
the cost of bus transportation for our Cincinnati tour. The original proposal
was for the choir to pay for charting the busses. However, some objections
were raised. Thursday night, officers will propose another approach and
a vote will be taken. Rather than paying for the cost for the entire charter,
the proposal will likely involve subsidizing all or part of individual
choir member's transportation costs.

Cincinnati
Bus Transportation Funding Vote
A vote on the proposal to pay for bus transportation to Cincinnati next
month from the Chancel Choir's treasury was delayed after some objections
were raised during the week. Kevin conducted an informal show of hands
to see who was in favor of the choir treasury paying for all of the charter
costs, half of the charter costs, or not paying for any of the costs.
Full payment and partial payment received about equal response. Choir
Treasurer Tom Lawrence reported that paying to charter two busses
and covering the $2,000 scholarship this spring would essentially use
all of the money raised by the swing concert fundraiser. The next Chancel
Choir fund raiser will be the Fall Follies Talent Show this fall on Oct.
29. A vote on the transportation funding issue will be taken at rehearsal
next week. Meanwhile, if you have any thoughts about this, Kevin urged
you to contact Chancel Choir President Chris Kennedy
at: clkhusker@aol.com

Chancel
Choir Update 4/4: Choir President's Devotional
Below is Chancel Choir President Chris Kennedy's April devotional.
Comments should be directed to him at: clkhusker@aol.com
The President's
Pen
There is a
green hill far away………
I usually try to do
our devotional around a song or hymn of the church. Even though the title
of the devotional is the first line in a hymn, I thought I branch out
this month. I don’t know how many of you follow the game or play
golf, but I love to every chance I get. This week and weekend is very
important to golfers, as the Masters tournament begins on Thursday and
culminates with the winner being awarded the coveted green jacket on Sunday.
Jack Nicklaus has won the event six times. Tiger Woods has already won
four times.
It is a great week
full of excitement, fun, and getting to play on one of the most challenging
courses in the world in Augusta, Georgia. Players are faced with narrow
fairways, competitive players and difficult cup placements on very difficult
greens often surrounded by sand bunkers or water hazards. Players must
know what club to use in what situation to get the ball to the green and
into the cup. To win the tournament is quite an honor, not to mention
financially rewarding (in 2006 $7 million in total prize money was awarded).
However, the green jacket must be returned to the club before the next
year’s event.
Interestingly enough,
there is another Master’s (note the apostrophe) event taking place
this week. It is called Easter. Master’s week or Holy week is an
exciting week beginning with Palm Sunday, then turning somber as we head
into Maundy Thursday then Good Friday and culminating on Sunday with all
the excitement in the world with the celebration of the Resurrection of
our Master, Jesus Christ. It is amazing how our Master’s week is
just as important in the Christian Church, as the Masters Tournament is
to all golfers regardless of their proficiency.
To the title of the
devotional, this song was written by Cecil Alexander as she coped with
the illness of her young daughter. Many times as she went into town, she
passed a small grassy mound outside the walls of Derry, Ireland. It reminded
her of Calvary and she wrote the song and published it in her Hymns for
Little Children in 1848.
So, as we head into
the celebration of Easter week, our Master’s week, let us be mindful
of our Christian walk not only this week, but every day of our life. Like
the golf event, our lives are often filled with narrow fairways, tough
decisions that may challenge our Christianity and not knowing what to
use or where to turn in those difficult times. One thing I do know; if
we put our faith and trust in the true Master, we will be guided around
those sand bunkers and water hazards of life. We may not win a green jacket
or a million dollars, but WE will receive a crown of glory in heaven when
our days on earth are done. Unlike the Green Jacket, your Crown of Glory
does not have to be returned. What better reward can there be?
I wish you all a blessed
Easter season and rejoice in the celebration of the Resurrection with
you.
In Christ,
Chris
