Chancel Choir Update: 3/30: Cares and Concerns
It is with sadness that we report the death of Pastor Debby Peebles' father, William Warren Graham. He died Thursday (3/29) in Colorado. A memorial service will be held in Colorado in May. Cards may be sent to: 784 Venneman Ave., St. Louis, MO 63122.

Alto Fran McMillian's abdominal surgery is now scheduled for April 6.

Chancel Choir Update 3/30: Important News / Cares and Concerns
It's Palm Sunday -- We Need You In The Loft
For Palm Sunday this week we will sing both services as usual. Call time is 8:30 a.m. in the Music Room. Anthem: What Wondrous Love Is This. Attendance at rehearsal last night was up and if you read Kevin's email a few days ago, you know he's is concerned about our participation for Holy Week and Easter.

We Sing For Maundy Thursday Service Next Week
The Chancel Choir will sing for the 7 p.m. Maundy Thursday worship service next week. Rehearsal will follow in the Music Room at 8:15 p.m.

Cincinnati Trip Details Announced; Transportation Vote Next Week
If you missed rehearsal last night, you'll need to pick up a tour data sheet and a form to fill out stating if you are going or not going on tour to Cincinnati and what accommodations you'll need. We will leave on Friday, May 18 at 1 p.m. and arrive back in St. Louis on Sunday, May 20 at 8 p.m. We will stay at the Hilton Cincinnati Netherland Plaza. Cost for a room is $119 -- which is less than the room cost for our tour to Indianapolis three years ago. Kevin announced that Chancel Choir officers had approved proposing to the choir that the bus charter costs be paid for from the choir's treasury. Cost for bus charter is $2,680 per bus or $5,360 for the two we will need for the trip. (That works out to about $58 per person for transportation.) The current choir treasury balance, after all expenses and obligations were paid for the Swingin' The Night Away fundraiser, is about $18,000. Chancel Choir policy requires that we wait a week before taking a vote on any expenditures, so a vote to determine if the choir will pay for the bus transportation for the tour will be taken at next week's rehearsal.

Chancel Choir Members Star In Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat
Here's one more plug for the upcoming musical at church. You've probably heard people talk about "Joseph." Several Chancel Choir members with "pivotal" roles in the production. This is an event you won't want to miss. Here are some additional reasons beyond the ones in Tuesday's email:

-- See Buddy Rains sing like a cowboy.
-- Watch as Shannon Meriwether counts golden coins for the richest man in Egypt.
-- See Terri Thompson dance like a harem girl.
-- Watch Sue Belval sing her heart out while Joseph is thrown in chains.
-- Be amazed at how Bonnie Halls can manage to be Larry Shephard's adoring wife.

Then there is the amazing set being built by Andy and Jim Belval and Jim Descher. These are but a few reasons why you'll want to plan now to attend one of the performances. But, the tickets are selling fast and we aren't just saying that. I'd suggest you order now. You can either call the church office to reserve your tickets or go online to the link below to order tickets "just like on Broadway."

Here are the show times and ticket link:
Friday, April 20 at 7:30 p.m.
Saturday, April 21 at 7:30 p.m.
Sunday, April 22 at 3 p.m.
http://tickets.evangelismtickets.com/evlist.php
Tickets are $12 for adults and $8 for seniors 65 or older, students or children. If you purchase 10 tickets, you get a 20 percent discount. There is a small handling fee if you order online. Or you can call the church office to reserve a ticket.

Cares and Concerns
Soprano Kathy Givens
remains at St. John's Mercy Medical Center undergoing treatment for fluid collecting on her heart -- a return of a previous complication from chemotherapy,

Tenor Chris Kender underwent surgery Thursday morning to remove a cyst from his neck.

Alto Fran McMillian's abdominal surgery is now scheduled for April 6.

Letter From Kevin - 3/28/07
IS IT APRIL YET?

I know that many people look forward to both Spring Break and March Madness, but frankly....I MISS YOU ALL!

With Easter quickly on our heels, I'm writing to help you understand how really desperate I need your presence. While Spring Fever abounds, those who want quality worship here at MUMC miss the presence of "that great choir" we have.

With the size of our choir, when a few people head out for vacation, we can still have that wonderful "full sound" we've come to love, but our average Chancel Choir attendance in March for Sunday worship is 75! To be exact, less than half of the choir!!!! Have I lost my charm? Is it time for me to retire?

But seriously...your church, your choir and your director need you!

I miss you,
Kevin

Chancel Choir Update 3/27: Important News
With Easter next week, we have some work to do on anthems for Easter and Palm Sundays. We're singing Credo from the Gospel Mass with brass and Jackie Smith doing the solo on Easter morning. Join us for rehearsal this week.

Chancel Choir Members Star In Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat
You've probably heard people talk about "Joseph." They are referring to the hugh musical being produced at our church next month. There's almost 100 people in the cast. What you may not know is that there are several Chancel Choir members with "pivotal" roles in the production. This is an event you won't want to miss. Here are some reasons why:

-- See Chancel Choir President Chris Kennedy croon like Elvis Presley.
-- Hear Maida McCormack play her accordion for dancing.
-- Watch Larry Shepherd try to portray an old man who cries on cue.
-- See Gary Ford attempt to make Jackie Smith "behave".
-- Hear Moe Parisien whistle like a ranch hand.
-- See Kristie Whitney in an Egyptian wig.
-- Hear Carol Lembky portray an angel complete with descant.
-- See Larry Dietzel look minacing.

These are but a few reasons why you'll want to plan now to attend one of the performances. But, the tickets are selling fast and we aren't just saying that. We were told this weekend that tickets for the Sunday matinee are running low. I'd suggest you order now. You can either call the church office or go online to the link below to order tickets "just like on Broadway."

Here are the show times and ticket link:
Friday, April 20 at 7:30 p.m.
Saturday, April 21 at 7:30 p.m.
Sunday, April 22 at 3 p.m.

Tickets are $12. There is a small handling fee if you order online.

Special Trip Planned Next Year
If you were absent from rehearsal last night -- and unfortunately many of you were -- you missed several important announcements. Kevin told the choir to reserve May 22, 23, 24, 25 and 26 in 2008 for a choir trip that no one will want to miss. He said it would be the trip talked about for years after. Details and destination will be announced at the end of year choir party on June 9. As for the remaining announcements from last night -- well I guess you missed them. (Okay, the trip was the big one. But, if there had been other announcements, you would have missed them too. Is the guilt working?)

Rehearsal Thursday Night
Kev is back and we'll work on Easter and Lenten music this week.

Calendar Production Is Underway - Your Donation Is Needed This Week
If you haven't made a contribution to the Chancel Choir Calendar, please deposit your money in the white bags at the back of the Music Room on Thursday night. Money donated above the cost of producing the calendars will be given to the church as part of the $100 Lost Talent Challenge.

Here's a note from Mary Dean:
Fyi ... through today -- Sunday -- we've received 44 white envelope donations for the 100 Dollar Choir Calendar Challenge, which means there are many choir members yet to donate. We are looking for donations over and above the $5 printing cost of the calendar (plus remember there was the dollar coin "seed" money). The average donation to date has been $11 -- translating to an average donation to MUMC of $5. I believe we can do even better than this for our choir challenge!! Please consider your contribution carefully and remember to bring it this Thursday night, March 15 (And thanks to the Chancel Choir calendar we know Thursday is Bud Kemper's, Roxanne Miller's and Jacque Rocchio's birthdays!)

Look for the white plastic collection bags in the back of the Music Room. If you have already donated, THANK YOU (and remember -- if the spirit moves, you can always donate some more this Thursday!)

Note: Money above the $5 cost of printing the calendar will be donated in the name of the Chancel Choir to MUMC. The donation amount to MUMC will be announced in church on a Sunday very soon, so please remember to donate ... and dig deep! It's a worthy cause! (Please remember all donations are anonymous.)

Spring Social Event - Lunch at Fast Eddie's Bonn Aire in Alton, Saturday, March 24
Back by intense demand, it's our most popular destination. As soon as we returned from Fast Eddy's last year, people wanted to go back. More than 50 made the trip last year and many were disappointed because they couldn't join us. So, mark your calendar for Saturday, March 24. We'll leave the church parking lot near the trash dumpster at 10:00 a.m. and make the drive to Alton in time to be there when Fast Eddie's opens. You'll enjoy the cheapest, finest food anywhere. Huge shrimp by the dozen for 25 cents each, half-pound hamburgers for 99 cents, amazing chicken and anything you want to drink. Unfortunately, no children for this trip -- you must be 21 to enter Fast Eddie's. A sign up sheet will be available on Thursday night.

River Blender Chorus Will Perform In Sanctuary Sunday Night

Chancel Choir Update 3/12: Choir President's Devotional
Below is Chancel Choir President Chris Kennedy's March devotional. Comments should be directed to him at: clkhusker@aol.com

The President's Pen

THE SHAMROCK………

As we move into the third month of the year, our thoughts, depending on what year it is, may turn to Easter. However, this year Easter is in April, so we may begin to think about St. Patrick’s day and all the festivities that go along with that (albeit never to be compared to those of Easter). We all know that the Shamrock is as Irish as the color green and the Leprechaun. It is the Shamrock that brings us luck, especially if we are lucky enough to find a four-leaf shamrock, better know as the infamous four-leaf leaf clover.

Let me share with you some information about another kind of “rock.” There is a song in our song book that has the chorus that reads as follows: “On Christ the solid rock I stand all other ground is sinking sand.” The first verse was very popular among British troops in WWII. They amended the first two lines as they sang: “My hope is built on nothing less than 3 red stripes and Sergeants mess” referring of course to the Sergeant in charge of the mess hall and the food he served. It is also an interesting parallel that “The Solid Rock”, was written by Edward Mote who was by training a carpenter. It is interesting how one carpenter used this song to express his Christian faith in another carpenter from a time long ago.

As I type this, I am reminded of the story about the evangelical preacher who was out on the street corner in England preaching his heart out to those interested enough to stop and listen. As his message went on, he was constantly heckled by an inebriated man who happened to be Irish. As the preacher was imploring the crowd to build their faith on the Rock, as Christ told Peter, the man yelled out from the back of the crowd…. "What about the Shamrock?" At this point the preacher stopped and calmly turned in his direction and uttered these words: “On Christ the solid Rock I stand, all other rocks are “Sham” rocks."

What rocks are you building your faith upon?? Are they the sparkly, worldly kind or the solid Rock we have in Jesus Christ? Always remember, he is there to support you, guide you and anchor you. He IS the Rock, and all other rocks pale by comparison. I leave you with the words from the third verse:

His oath, His covenant, His blood, support me in the ‘whelming flood.
When all around my soul gives way, He then is all my Hope and Stay.

May God's richest blessings be with you and yours.

In Christ,
Chris

Daylight Saving Time Begins This Saturday
Yes, its time to set your clocks ahead (spring forward) on Saturday night before you go to bed or you'll miss church on Sunday. Daylight saving times is starting early this year thanks to a new federal law to conserve energy. Your computer may not have heard the word on this, especially if it is not running Windows XP. If the clock and calendar on your computer don't automatically make the change, you'll need to make an update.

Beds Are Needed For Visiting Choir Next Week
Here's a note from Alto Mary Beth Harper whose father directed this choir for 40 years:
The Greenville A Capella Choir is from Greenville College, Greeenville, Ill., which is approximately 50 miles east of St. Louis. For those of you who may not know, Greenville College is a Free Methodist Christian Liberal Arts four-year college that was founded in 1892. It's enrollment is currently around 1200 students. Each year the A Capella choir takes a spring tour and they are coming to MUMC toward the conclusion of this year's tour. This choir provides an impressive performance of high quality musicianship much worth hearing. As of 3/8, we need 17 more beds for the evening of Saturday, 3/17. The choir members will be ready for pick-up at 8:30 p.m. Saturday night and will need to return to the church by 8:00 a.m. Sunday morning. Please complete a purple availability card and/or contact Mary Beth Harper at mbhaper72@hotmail.com or 314-265-9424, if you are willing to provide housing. Thank you for your kind hospitality for this great group of students.

Calendar Contributions Will Continue
We'll continue accepting calendar contributions on Sunday. Please put your contribution in a plain white envelope and leave it in one of the plastic collection bags located in the back of the Music Room. Proceeds above the cost of producing the calendar will be contributed to the church's Lost Talent Lenten Challenge in the name of the Chancel Choir.

Choir Calendar Lenten Challenge Contribution Due Thursday
As a part of the $100 "lost talents challenge" made in church last fall, Soprano Mary Dean challenged the choir at rehearsal last week to reserve a copy of this year's Chancel Choir wall calendar by making a contribution reflecting how much value this year's wall calendar has brought them. All money contributed above the cost of producing the calendars will be donated to the church's lost talent project in the Chancel Choir's name. No choir treasury funds are used to produce the calendars. Mary told the choir a similar calendar from a book store would cost $12 to $15 and making a single copy custom family calendar at Kinkos would run as much as $22. Mary used her $100 "lost talent challenge" presented in worship last fall to purchase new dollar coins and gave one to each member of the choir present at rehearsal as "seed" money to "invest" in the choir's generosity. Choir members will be asked to place their calendar contribution in a white envelope this Thursday night. The donations will be anonymous.

Last year, a $5 contribution was suggested. Mary told the choir a similar calendar from a book store would cost $12 to $15 and making a single copy custom family calendar at Kinkos would run as much as $22. Chancel Choir Update 2/28: Choir President's Devotional
Below is Chancel Choir President Chris Kennedy's February devotional. Comments should be directed to him at: clkhusker@aol.com

The President’s Pen

“Knock, Knock…Who’s There…….?”

No don’t worry this is not one of the President’s jokes. I realize February is almost gone and now is not the best time to be writing a devotional for the month. But I guess it’s still better late than never. Just think of all the things the month of February brings to us; National Heart Month, Black History Month and who could ever forget Valentines Day. Speaking of Valentines, did you know there are at least 40 songs in our hymnal that have the word “Love” in the title? I’m sure there are countless others with the word “Love" intertwined in the verses.

So why the Knock, knock? I’m sure many have seen the picture of Jesus standing in what appears to be a garden knocking at a door. If you look at the picture closely, you will notice that the light shines on the door and the brace above the door, in a way that resembles a heart. It takes a little imagination, but once you’ve seen the heart, you’ll never miss it again. It is true that Jesus often stands at our heart’s door and waits for us to bid him enter. I guess you could say he might want You to be His Valentine. How do we respond? We may let him in and then relegate him to the distant corners only to be called upon when we really need him. Human wants and desires are put before him, yet his love is always there. There is a song in the Salvation Army Song Book I grew up singing called “Swing Wide the Door of your Heart to the King of Kings.” It goes like this:

Swing wide the door of your heart to the King of kings,
Bid him welcome for the wonderful peace He brings,
He will shelter you under his outstretched wings,
Swing wide the door of your heart to the King of kings.

Have you opened the door of your heart to the King of kings? Have you asked him to be your Valentine? There is still time to do so. Just like this devotional, it’s better late than never.

I wish you God’s peace and Love.

Chris K.

Chancel Choir Update 2/27: News / Cares and Concerns
Rehearse for Easter This Thursday

Chancel Choir will prepare music for Lent and Easter this Thursday at the regular time in the Music Room. It's also the first Thursday of the month and that means refreshments will follow.

Choir Greeters Are A Big Hit in the Narthex
Members of Chancel Choir were on duty in the Narthex last Sunday greeting people as they arrived for worship. It was the first time Chancel Choir members assisted the Welcome Ministry with its Sunday morning duties. The purple robes will be greeting in the Narthex one Sunday each month.

Youth Auction Dinner From Last Year Was Served Saturday Night
The last of two dinners offered for sale at the youth auction last year was served Saturday night at the home of Soprano Sue and Bass Jim Belval. Bass Jim Descher and Tenor Tim Zink were chefs for the evening meal which was sold for $1,600 to five couples: Mary and Kenny Dean, Sandy and Gary Ford, Ramona and Phil Schroeder, Cece Spatola and Mike Latimer, and Barb Barrett and Dave Schuler. Kitchen help and servers included Soprano Penny and Tenor Bob Klebe and Soprano Joy and Bass Moe Parisien. Entertainment was provided by Kevin and Larry Pry on piano. A second dinner, also sold for $1,600, was served last fall. Earlier this year, the choir officers decided to not offer dinners for sale at the auction this year. A decision on what the choir will donate to the auction this year will made later.

Want To Hear Some Jazz?
The choir's next social event will be a trip to the St. Louis Jazz Club on Sunday afternoon, March 11. We'll attend the St. Louis Jazz Club's concert at the Moolah Shrine Center. The program will feature the "You Can't Beat Experience Jazz Band." Doors will open at 1:15 p.m. and the concert will run from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m. The cost is $12. A signup sheet for the jazz concert will be available this Thursday. As an added treat, Alto Laura Ferree's father is the pianist for the jazz band we'll hear.

Cares and Concerns
Tenor Gary Moser
is recovering at his home from surgery last Wednesday to treat prostrate cancer. We received this note from him: "The surgery went well and I got to come on Friday because my progress was so good. Please give my thanks to my choir family for all the cards, expressions of concern and support, and especially all the prayers during the last few weeks. As soon as I am able to leave home, I'll back in the ranks. The concert was a real motivator. It was nice to get to hear everyone from the congregation, but I'd rather be up there among the ranks."

Surgery to repair an injury to Tenor Chris Kennedy's shoulder scheduled for today (2/27) has been postponed until Chris recovers from bronchitis.

Bass Jim Anderson continues to improve from a stroke he suffered in December. He was present in the audience for our concert and in church last Sunday. Carleen reports: "His strength is increasing and his speech is coming along quite well. He gets a little frustrated with not being able to communicate easily, but handles it very well."

This note from Cindy Steiner: “My sincere apology to all who expressed interest in the e-mail I sent last week about the two black labs needing a good home. I called the number on Friday to find out what the status was for them and was told it was all a big hoax.

The number was for a human resources firm here in town that had received well over 800 calls about the dogs. The lady I spoke with said there indeed are two such dogs, but they have a very good home and there is no ill family member. She did not know what could possibly be the motive behind such a stunt, but was very apologetic about any inconvenience it caused. I told her I had gotten my information from a Sunday School class member (I guess thinking that somehow validated the information) and she told me they had received a call from several nuns who had forwarded the e-mail to everyone in their parish.

If you are not too disillusioned by all this and are interested in labs, check out the lab rescue web site: www.dirksfund.com – or call Bob (guy who is in charge of the organization) at 314-966-3326.

Thanks to all you good hearted people who expressed concern and interest in this. Next time I’ll check it out before forwarding.”

Chancel Choir Update 2/21: Cares and Concerns
Alto Fran McMillian's
surgery today (2/21) to reverse a colostomy from her abdominal surgery last year was canceled. The surgeon found that a recent blood test indicated a problem with Fran's liver, so she had an ultrasound and another blood test and returned home. "We had lunch and now I am ready for a nap," Fran said this afternoon. "I was so looking forward to getting this taken care of, so I'm disappointed. Well, as the surgeon said, 'Better safe than sorry.' The surgeon indicated 'maybe' in a couple of weeks. Thanks for prayers and your concern."

Bass Jim Webb return to his home yesterday (2/20) following successful surgery to place stints in coronary arteries. "The surgery went well and he is actually resting at home. Thank you for your prayers and concerns. We appreciate them very much," Soprano Margaret Webb reports.

Baritone Gary Moser was scheduled to undergo surgery this afternoon (2/21) at St. Luke's Hospital to treat prostate cancer.

This from Alto Dixie Moll: "Could you do me a favor? I wore a sweatshirt Saturday that some of the women in the choir just really liked. They wanted information on ordering it. Could you include the following information in your next e-mail to the interested women? For those women wanting to order the black Sweatshirt saying "Got Music?", you may contact Wendy Engel wendy@bunique.com and order the black sequin sweatshirt -- she still carries it."

Cares and Concerns
Bass Tom and Alto Diane Lawrence appreciate the prayers and concerns for their daughter, Alicia, who underwent surgery to remove ovarian cysts last week. Tom reports, "the ovarian cysts were benign but fast growing. If one had ruptured it would have possibly damaged her transplanted kidney so on Wednesday she had a total hysterectomy. She is home and moving slowly, but doing well."

Bass Jim Webb remains at Missouri Baptist Medical Center where he had surgery yesterday (2/19) to place two stints in coronary arteries.

Alto Fran McMillian will under go surgery Wednesday (2/21) at Missouri Baptist Medical Center to reverse a colostomy from her abdominal surgery last year.

Coventry Choir Alto Cindy Stiener reports that a member of her Sunday School class is helping a friend, recently diagnosed with a terminal illness, find homes for his two dogs. Here are the details: The owner of these two beautiful labs has terminal cancer and can't care for them anymore. He is heartbroken and hopes to find a family for them while he is still able. These boys are four years old and have been raised together and he would like very much to find a home who can take them both so they can stay together. Details: Two beautiful 4-year-old pure bred male Black Labs, Hunter and Fame, both neutered. They are truly wonderful dogs. The owner's grandchildren can crawl all over them and like a typical lab; they just lay there and love it. Both are up to date on their shots, housebroken and very well behaved. He would love to keep these two boys together if possible as they were raised together and are the best of friends. Contact: Jim Wolf, office: 314-962-9400 or cell: 314-322-5903

Note From Kevin
February 13, 2006

Dear Chancel Choir Friends,
By this time, some of you have heard the news. This past week, Ted resigned as our Organist-Music Associate, effective immediately. While this news probably comes as a surprise to many of you, we, of course, honor Ted's request. He is going on to pursue other opportunities and we wish him well. For nearly 10 years, Ted has served in his post, and provided some very outstanding musical moments for our church. His fine talent will be missed. While we will not have an official going away event, those wanting to wish Ted a "fond farewell" are invited to send personal notes to his home.

In the interim, we will fill staffing issues with many of our very capable Associate Organists and accompanists. In addition, we will also have several guest musicians whom we will feature during this time.

Staff-Parish Relations Committee has given me permission to move forward in whatever way I see necessary. The process will include several weeks of an interim period, followed by a complete search for a replacement that will probably happen this summer. It is my goal to have a new staff member on board by August.

For the immediate concern, I'm pleased to announce that Carolbeth True will be our featured guest artist and accompanist for the upcoming concert. Carolbeth is one of St. Louis' finest jazz pianists, and I'm excited to work with her.

I look forward to an exciting week and a great concert.

All the best,
Kevin

Chancel Choir officers agreed to propose a $2,000 contribution from proceeds of the upcoming Swingin' The Night Away concert to the church youth's fundraising drive for hunger relief to be conducted the same weekend as the concert. The amount is equal to the amount of our annual scholarship. According to the Chancel Choir's fund management policy, expenditures totaling more than $500 must be submitted to the choir and voted on at least one week later. Chancel Choir President Chris Kennedy made the proposal during rehearsal Thursday night. The choir's treasury balance currently stands at $13,466. The annual fund raising concerts make between $5000 and $8000 depending on expenses and attendance. The choir's treasury policy also calls for a tithe of ten percent of the net from each of our fund raising events to be contributed to the church's operating fund. Swingin' The Night Away Concert Is Feb. 18
The Chancel Choir's big fund raising concert will be February 18 and will feature swing music. The choir began rehearsing music for the performance last night. The concert was rescheduled when Kevin learned the original date was also the Super Bowl. Change the date for the concert and rehearsals on your official Chancel Choir Calendar. Tickets for the concert go on sale this Sunday in the Narthex. As in previous years, each choir member will receive five tickets to sell. Kevin also told the choir to begin thinking about wearing black and silver for the concert. Since much of the money raised by our concerts goes to our scholarship program, four scholarship winners will perform during the concert.
Here is the schedule:
Thursday, Feb. 15, 7:30 p.m. -- Concert Rehearsal
Saturday, Feb. 17, 10 a.m. -- Concert Rehearsal
Sunday, Feb. 18, 7:30 p.m. -- Swingin' the Night Away Concert
Remove all other special rehearsals from the month of January on your choir calendar.

Tour To Cincinnati Dates Are Set
The Chancel Choir will tour to Cincinnati, Ohio this spring. Dates for the tour are May 18, 19 and 20. Details and logistic plans for the tour will be provided later this month. The choir does a regional tour every other year.

Purple Greeters Are Headed To The Narthex
Chancel Choir officers approved a plan to involve members of the Chancel Choir in the church's Welcome Ministry. Choir members, dressed in choir robes, will provide welcome services in the Narthex one Sunday a month. A signup sheet will be available soon. About 10 choir members will be needed to welcome people arriving for Sunday worship services. Officers believe this will be a great way for the choir to help another ministry in the church and be more visible to church members outside the loft.

Cares and Concerns
Soprano Joyce Lang
is now under the care of a St. Louis area hospice. Soprano Sue Sturhahn told the choir last night that Joyce now has a tumor surrounding her heart and is having trouble breathing. Joyce was diagnosed with ovarian cancer about six years ago. No visits right now, but cards would be appreciated. The address: 539 Boulder River Dr., O'Fallon, Mo. 63368-9666.

Baritone Jim Anderson's family is hopeful that he will be moved to a St. Louis rehab facility today. A urinary tract infection discovered yesterday delayed his move. His family reports that he is fairly alert. Jim remains hospitalized at University Hospital at the University of Missouri Medical Center in Columbia, Mo., where he suffered a stroke last Friday.

Soprano Ellen Maxfield remains in Intensive Care at University of Missouri Medical Center in Columbia, Mo., following recent surgery to repair a hiatal hernia and additional complications. Cards may be sent to: University Hospital, One Hospital Drive, Columbia, MO 65212.

Alto Jean Kinnard has been hospitalized for injuries suffered yesterday while she was being transferred to her bed in a local rehab center. Jean was taken to the rehab facility to recover from surgery to remove her gallbladder last week.

Alto Debbi Brader's father, Gene Jackson, will undergo surgery in Jackson, Tenn., next Thursday for a recurrence of bladder cancer.

Alto Barb Farmer's cousin, Vicki Dohrmann, a former choir member, suffered a ankle fracture during a fall in her home this week. She underwent surgery to repair her ankle. Soprano Jo Ann Jones' husband, Dr. Bruce Jones, performed the surgery.

Our thoughts and prayers are requested for these member of the Chancel Choir family.

Chancel Choir Update 1/3: Choir President's Devotional
Below is Chancel Choir President Chris Kennedy's January devotional. Comments should be directed to him at: clkhusker@aol.com

The President’s Pen

“Mark My Words…….”

How many can remember that phrase spoken so seriously by our parents? Better yet, how many can remember repeating it to your children? Quite a few I’ll bet. This warning often drew a line in the sand regarding our behavior or lack thereof, or made us take note of a promise of some kind. We can use this charge to focus on our worship experience and choir music to take heed of the “words” of a song or creed. At times we find ourselves singing for singing sake, without really taking the time to understand the content of the words of the verses. As Kevin will say, “I know you are looking for notes, but focus on the words too!” Take the words to one of my favorite hymns, #421 in our hymnal, “Make Me a Captive Lord.” I hate to use the term “oxymoron” to outline the first two verses, but it best describes the intention of the author. Without having to search for your notes, take a look at what I mean.

Make me a captive Lord and then I shall be free.
Force me to render up my sword and I shall conqueror be.
I sink in life’s alarms, when by myself I stand.
Imprison me within thine arms, and strong shall be my hand.

My favorite is the next verse and how those who sing it, pronounce the word “wind” in the second line. The author is comparing our soul to the inner workings of a watch or clock, in that we must have he master’s hand with us to control our spiritual walk. The reference to the spring and chain are key to this intention (winding a watch or pulling the chain on a Grandfather clock).

My heart is weak and poor until it master find,
It has no spring of action sure, it varies with the wind.
It cannot freely move, till thou hast wrought its chain,
Enslave it with thy matchless love, and deathless it shall reign.

These are great words to help us usher in the New Year. Without God’s winding, or setting our pendulum in motion we cannot be free to live life in the Christian way. It is my prayer for each of us to share a new beginning in our spiritual journeys as we begin 2007. Mark my words .....

With God’s blessings on your daily walk with him,

Chris K.

Chancel Choir Update 1/2: News / Cares and Concerns
It's Back To Work This Thursday
Our first rehearsal of the new year is this Thursday. We'll see you in the Music Room at 7:30 p.m. There'll be plenty to do -- it's less than six weeks before the Chancel Choir's big fund raising concert on Feb. 18.

Cares and Concerns
Baritone Jim Anderson
continues to recover from a stroke he suffered Friday (12/29) in Columbia, Mo. He remains in the intensive care unit at University Hospital at the University of Missouri Medical Center in Columbia. At mid-day today (1/2), Soprano Carleen Anderson reports that Jim is alert and recognizes his family. There was a large bleed during the stroke which has caused considerable damage to his ability to speak. Jim has also suffered some paralysis which is believed to be reversible. Carleen says that Jim will be moved to St. Luke's Hospital in Chesterfield in a day or two depending on results of an MRI today.

Chancel Choir Update 1/1: Cares and Concerns
Baritone Jim Anderson
remains hospitalized today in intensive care at University Hospital at the University of Missouri Medical Center in Columbia, Mo. He continues to recover from a stroke suffered on Friday and is expected to be transferred to a rehabilitation facility in St. Louis sometime later this week. A note received from his family appears below:

"Bless you all for your prayers and continued support. My mom wanted me to thank all and give you the following on today's progress. Jim had a much better day today (1/1). The CT scan looked "promising" -- bleeding has stopped in the brain, swelling is down, and if the MRI is good tomorrow, he will be moved to a bed in the step-down unit or regular floor, I'm not sure, but out of ICU. They are looking at probably being back home to St. Louis with Jim in a rehabilitation facility by probably late this week. He did have an episode around 3 this afternoon of high blood pressure and headache, but it seems to be back under control. Slept a lot today, didn't want to talk or communicate much, and was "kinda cranky", mostly about eating the pureed food. His motor control seems stronger and he sat up in a chair some. Keep praying. Christine"
