Chancel Choir Update 12/31: Cares and Concerns
We are saddened to report that Baritone Jim Anderson, husband of Soprano Carleen Anderson, suffered a stroke on Friday and is in intensive care at University Hospital at the University of Missouri in Columbia, Mo. Details of his condition are included in the note below received late this afternoon (12/31) from his daughter, Christine Waldrop.

"Mom asked me to write to all and let you know that Jim Anderson had a stroke this past Friday. He was taking his brother-in-law, John Peirce, back to Columbia, Missouri, and while eating lunch at a restaurant there, starting having problems signing the check, talking, etc. He tried to get into his car and had a small accident, so they took him to the University hospital there, where they found a "significant temporal bleed into the left side of the brain."

"Jim's brother, Bob, drove Mom to Columbia and she is there at the hospital with him. His kids, Jimmy and Susie have also flown in and are with him. He is in ICU and the latest reports from Mom this morning are that he is not doing as well as yesterday, where they were able to keep him more alert and he said as many as 5 or 6 words in a small sentence. Speech seems most affected at this time, but still early to tell. Mom says he was sick this morning, and has winced with pain or nausea, slept more today and little or no verbal communication, but was more alert yesterday.

"They hope to transfer him to a St. Louis rehab center as soon as possible, maybe later this week, to continue treatment, but we don't know when. Doctors also found 50% blockage of caritod arteries, so surgery is certainly possible in the future. Please pray for Jim and Mom and our family that he makes a good recovery and we have guidance from God to help him. Mom is in the ICU much of the day, but does step out for phone calls at times and asked me to pass along her cell number. It is 314-775-8082. If you need to reach me, my home number is 636-230-3525. Thanks for your prayers and support. I will send updates as I get them. Christine."

Chancel Choir Update 12/10: Choir President's Devotional
Below is Chancel Choir President Chris Kennedy's December devotional. Comments should be directed to him at: clkhusker@aol.com

“Lights, Camera, Action”

We all recognize those famous words from any movie, story or TV show. Just think, where we would be without lights? I know, watching TV in the dark.

Sir Harry Lauder, a famous Scottish singer and composer of simple Scottish songs, used to tell how one evening he sat in his window as the evening shadows grew around the street outside. Under his window passed the Lamplighter, inserting his long pole within the glass cover of lamp after lamp. He soon disappeared into the distance, but one could follow him by following his trail of lights left behind him. Sir Harry used to think that it didn’t matter who the Lamplighter was, as long as the lamps were lit every night.

Often, we too find ourselves traveling through a world which contains darkness and gloom. It does not matter who we are, what stock from which we came, nor whether we are seen or even famous. What matters most is whether we leave behind rows of twinkling lights to guide others. This Christmas season, as we welcome the birth of the Light of the World, may we let our lights so shine before men. By doing so, the world will see the Light and Glory of the newborn King in all that we do.

Blessings for a safe and happy Holiday Season.

Chancel Choir Update 12/8: Cares and Concerns
Alto Jean Kinnard
has returned to the Meramec Bluffs Skilled Nursing facility. She is in room 346B
Soprano Jo Ann Jones reports that Suyapita Macias, the 11-year-old Honduran girl that lived with them for six months while undergoing corrective surgery in St. Louis, died in Honduras Monday from an infection in a shunt placed in her brain two days after here birth to relieve pressure. Children with spina bifida often need these shunts. "Suyapita's shunt was fine when they checked it out just before she left for Honduras in June, but she had recently had some serious problems with it. The doctors there did one surgery about two weeks ago to move it from one side of her head to the other. Then it got infected. Apparently they did another surgery either yesterday or today to try to correct the infection, but she died," Jo Ann said. Many choir members met and visited with Suyapita and her mother, Lilian, during their stay in St. Louis. Jo Ann says that Lilian was with her daughter constantly.

Join The Christmas Caroling at The Tree Lot This Saturday
Members of the Chancel Choir will sing Christmas carols at the Methodist Men's Christmas tree lot at 10 a.m. and again at 2 p.m. this Saturday, Nov. 25. So far we only have three people signed up for each 30-minute session. So, if you'd like to sing some carols this Saturday, plan on joining us. Tenor Tim Zink is in charge this Saturday. If you plan to sing, let him know by email at timnlor@charter.net or at 636-230-9017. The Christmas tree lot is located on Manchester Road west of the church next to the Enterprise Rent-A-Car office and in front of the Manchester Athletic Assn. ball fields. The choir will also sing at the lot on Saturday, Dec. 3. A signup will be available in the music room for that appearance.

Soprano Draught Threatens Upcoming Holiday Season
This note from Kevin:
In a choir of 160 people, including a soprano section of 48 singers, one would guess that there would always be an abundance of Sopranos. Well, one would be guessing wrong. Just this past Sunday, there were 22 sopranos in attendance at the 10:30 service. While those 22 women were magnificent, one can't help but wonder where the other HALF of the section was. In a related incident, the Alto section, with 54 ladies on the roster, had 30 present for the morning. A better showing indeed, but not the stellar participation that the Chancel Choir is known for. Stay tuned for more info on the outcome of the season.

Circle Of Concern Toy Collection Again This Year
Once again this year, the Chancel Choir will be collecting Christmas gifts for Circle of Concern. If you are going to shop early, don't purchase balls -- a church member has already donated a supply of sports and playground balls. Choir President Chris Kennedy is in charge of the toy drive this year. Look for more details on the toy drive soon.

Chancel Choir Christmas Collection Recording Available
Just in time for Christmas listening or gifting to family, a CD of the best music from the Chancel Choir's last seven holiday concerts is now available. The CD includes selections ranging from Handel's Messiah to Christmas carols, all remastered for improved sound. If you would like a recording, please reply to this email. The recordings are $10 as usual.

Cares and Concerns
Soprano Karen Fair
reports that her mother, Lillian Wiers, is undergoing treatment at St. John's Mercy Medical Center for a palimony embolism which migrated to her lungs from her leg. She is expected to remain in the hospital for a few days.

Have a safe and happy Thanksgiving.

Chancel Choir Update 11/17: News
Choir Sings Only at 10:30 a.m. This Sunday
The Fair Trade sale is taking over the Fellowship Hall on Sunday and that means the Contemporary Service will be held in the main Sanctuary at 9 a.m., but what the really means is no Chancel Choir in the loft at 9 a.m. So, we'll warm up in the Music Room at 10 a.m. this Sunday and sing only at 10:30 a.m. Anthems: All Glory Be to God and To Love Our God.

Christmas Caroling at The Tree Lot
How about getting into the Christmas spirit by singing to people buying their Christmas trees at the Methodist Men's Tree Lot? Great idea, huh? Choir officers approved a plan to have a group of choir members sing at the tree lot two times on two Saturdays, Nov. 25 and on Dec. 2. We'll sing at 10 a.m. and again at 2 p.m. each day. Just carols, nothing fancy. And we'll hand out information about our Christmas concert. A signup will be available this Sunday.

Talent Will Be Used to Serve Breakfast To Choir Before December 16 Rehearsal
Remember when they gave away $100 bills in church and asked people to use their talents to see how much that money could grow? Well Soprano Merry Gnaegy is using her $100 to feed the choir and see how much it can grow. She will provide a hot breakfast prior to our 10 a.m. Christmas concert rehearsal on Saturday, Dec. 16. Details and a signup sheet will be available soon.

Notes From Sunday's Rehearsal of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir in Salt Lake City

I am in Salt Lake City this weekend attending a conference and had an opportunity Sunday morning to sit in on the Mormon Tabernacle Choir's rehearsal and stayed for the taping of it's weekly television and radio broadcast. I couldn't pass up an opportunity to do some scouting of the MTC on behalf of the largest Methodist Church Choir in Missouri (that's us). The choir is currently rehearsing and performing in the church's conference center while the Tabernacle building is being reconstructed and reinforced for earthquakes. The "conference center" is a beautiful auditorium with automated digital broadcast equipment, a 130-rank pipe organ with 7,708 pipes and a five-manual console, and an unobstructed view for all of its 21,000 seats.

The choir's director, Mack Wilberg, (composer of many of our anthems) began the one-hour pre-broadcast rehearsal singing selections for Veterans Day. Yesterday's broadcast consisted of patriotic music for the holiday. As the rehearsal began, Wilberg carefully reviewed passages from the music for both the choir and orchestra. At one point he stopped the choir and told them to open their mouths so that vowels would sound fuller. It was the same thing Kevin tells us about voicing "ahhhs". I feel a little better for us now knowing the MTC also has diction problems. I found it interesting that the choir's singers all appeared enthusiastic and happy to be in the big choir loft even though most of them have done a broadcast hundreds of times before. The really have to be since all are fair game for one of the many television cameras pointed at them during the broadcast. I also noted there was no talking and every eye was focused on Wilberg the entire time. The loft space is so big, small video monitors are used so performers can see Wilberg's hands while he conducts. After a short break, the choir ran a dress rehearsal of its broadcast for technical rehearsal and timing. The public is then allowed to watch the live broadcast at 9:30 a.m. mountain time every Sunday. Yesterday's broadcast was number 4,028 and was carried live on the local Salt Lake City television station while being taped for broadcast next Sunday by a national network of television stations and the CBS radio network.

Here are some interesting facts about the MTC:
-- There are currently 360 singers in the choir. (Yesterday 107 men and 177 women were present).
-- All singers are volunteers and must pass an audition to join the choir.
-- All singers must live within 100 miles of Salt Lake City and many commute most of those 100 miles to the two weekly rehearsals and performances.
-- Choir members must be between the ages of 25 and 60.
-- After 25 years in the choir, singers are asked to retire to allow new participants.
-- The choir averages 75 concerts a year (not counting the broadcasts).
-- The choir performs with its 120-piece orchestra also made of up volunteers from the Salt Lake City area.
-- Tickets for the annual MTC Christmas concert went on sale online on Saturday and all 21,000 were sold in hours.
-- The choir's Sunday broadcasts began in 1929 and are the longest running continuous network broadcast, now carried by more than 2,000 radio and television stations and cable systems.

Chancel Choir Update 11/8: Choir President's Devotional
At the last Chancel Choir officer's meeting, president Chris Kennedy volunteered to prepare an occasional devotional for the choir and provide it my email. His first devotional appears below. Comments should be directed to him at: clkhusker@aol.com

The President’s Pen
One of the things I wanted to do while choir President is take time each month to minister to our worship and spiritual needs. We minister to so many through our music, that I wanted to be able to give back a little to each of you as we share the ministry of music together. So I thought I’d embark on that path at least once a month with a devotional message or thought to ponder.

Jesus Loves Me……….

Did you know there are only two civilians buried in the military cemetery at West Point?

Anna and Susan Warner were sisters whose lives were devastated with the financial crisis of 1837. The family’s fortune was lost and they moved into an old house on Constitution Island across from West Point. To help make ends meet they wrote stories and poetry and had numerous publications. Their most famous was a novel called “Say and Seal.” It became a best seller second only to “Uncle Tom’s Cabin.” The story was about a little boy, Johnny Fox who is dying. His Sunday school teacher, John Linden is visiting him during his last days and takes little Johnny in his arms and begins rocking him while making up a song and singing it to him. The made up song in the book was written by Anna. Years later when hymnwriter William Bradbury read the book he composed a score to go along with the words. It soon became the best known children’s song in the world: Jesus Loves Me! Anna and Susan also taught Bible classes at the Academy for the cadets for forty years and were buried with full honors in the West Point Cemetery.

Although written as a children’s hymn, we find comfort in knowing the words apply to we adults as well. No matter what our circumstances or lot in life, Jesus will always love us and we can find comfort in knowing that fact. The last stanza pretty much says it all:

Jesus loves me! He will stay,
Close beside me all the way.
He’s prepared a home for me,
And someday His face I’ll see.

With God’s blessings on your daily walk with him,

Chris K.
